This is a topic which i am hugely opinionated on. Being someone who's played battlefield games since BF1942 it's a pretty important issue to me and i wanted to find out what you guys thought.
I must've been about 10 when I first played Battlefield. It was the weekend and my dad had just bought me the PC gamer magazine (yes i was a true nerd even at 10). These magazines always had little "demo discs" in and this particular one had the multiplayer demo for Battlefield 1942. Now as a child it was obviously very easy to keep me entertained. I will never forget the hours i spent on that demo, sometimes just on a empty local server flying the planes and driving the jeeps. It was an incredible experience and to me it was just amazing. A few months later i picked up the retail game and installed it on my PC. I was in love (first true love). The community was amazing and I just loved playing the 64 player conquest matches on huge maps like El Alamein etc.
As well as this the experience was immersive. Okay the graphics were nothing special. But the sounds were perfect. Nose diving a Japanese Zero or driving a Sherman tank felt incredible and this was all down to the great sounds and also the simplicity of the game. Which brings me onto my next point. Simplicity.
In Battlefield 1942 we couldn't even change our loadouts. You picked a class and got sent on your way. I LOVED THIS. Not only did it provide a generally equal playing field (no OP guns etc) it enforced a sense of realism. As if you'd all just been to boot camp and given these guns.
When I look at (and play) todays Battlefield games i really just get an overwhelming sense of disappointment at what it could've been. Battlefield 4 (in my opinion) is not really a battlefield game. It's an expanded version of the most generic shooters on the market.
It's lost the realism that was demonstrated in the early battlefield games. We see bright pink guns and red helicopters flying around which totally ruins the experience for me. It feels like being in a paintball match.
As a child i always dreamed about what future battlefield games would be like. I imagined we would be on 200 player servers by now with incredibly immersive graphics. The graphics have also gone downhill in my opinion. From Bad company 2 to battlefield 4 they seemed to just become boring. Combined with the overuse of effects and things like levolution its began to feel like a scripted attempt to constantly replicate the things which made Battlefield 1942 - 2142 amazing.
Features are being reintroduced as gimmicks. Things like carrier assault. In Battlefield 1942 we could drive the aircraft carriers around in conquest and they could be sunk.
I could go on for hours but I will leave this here. I would love to hear your opinions on the series.
