Just wondering what would be the best thing to do. They are around 8 years old, so I'm not sure if it would be worth sending them to Sennheiser for repair for £54 as it might not be long before one of the drivers fails...

Other option is to buy the replacement headband and try to repair them myself, but I'm not sure whether my soldering would be good enough not to get noise etc problems. Do you need special solder for audio equipment?

Or I guess after 8 years it might be time to buy some new ones.. I do love these, but they are a little lacking in bass if i'm honest. If I was to buy something else they would have to be as comfortable for wearing for hours at a time, for gaming, listening to music and watching tv shows/movies. I basically use them for everything. Any reccomendations? I'd not like to spend over £100 really. Think these sennheisers were £60 when I bought them and prices seem to have doubled since then :(.

TIA

EDIT: is this in the wrong forum? :o

Hmm, not a bad idea :D. I'll have to think of a way to make it look accidental lol.

Are the HD558s worth £120? Double what I paid for the HD555s. Anything else worth a look that has the comfort of the HD555s but maybe a touch more bass?

57 views and 1 reply :(. I'll need to get a new pair this week so was hoping someone could help. Not sure whether to go for the HD558, or maybe pay a bit more and get some X1's as reading around on here they seem to be a good choice for an upgrade from HD555's. A bit more bass which is what I wanted, but the only thing putting me off is the ear cups look a little small. I need to be able to wear them for hours at a time with no discomfort.

These HD555's, everything needs replacing really, I can't imagine them just giving me a brand new pair for the £54 repair price. I can't seem to find any info on what they will and won't replace.

TLDR

HD555 repaired for £54 but possibly end up with same drivers which are 8 years old

HD558 £122.18, but seem to be just same as my HD555, which were £60 :(

X1 £174.45, sound like they might be a good upgrade from the HD555's, but are they comfy for long periods? Plus are they worth paying that much over the HD558's?

wat do?

I had the 595s which were replaced with the X1 and yes they are way better than the HDs by a long way, very comfortable as well.

I would not pay £50 to get them fixed, it's time to upgrade.

If you're after the X1 keep an eye on the MM as I will be putting mine up for sale soon.

If your interested I have a pair of brand new HD558's I'll stick up on the members market for you to buy.

Only been used twice. Reason for sale is my Q701's should be arriving any day now.

I'd take £95 for them fully boxed, etc.

I was planning on modding them into 598's but not done it so far. All you do is remove some foam from inside the grill.

Roughly what price would you be putting them up for? Are they in good condition? Certainly very interested in the X1's after looking at some reviews.

Gah decisions decisions. I know these will be comfy as my 555's are, but just don't know whether it would be better to go for an upgrade now.

I looked at the HD600, but i'd also have to buy an amp so it's a bit too much at the moment for me to justify. I'll need to upgrade my PC soon, so I don't want to spend too much and have to sacrifice on the pc.

won't they need amping though? I think the OP is running motherboard audio and doesn't want to buy an amp or sound card.

They are not the worst to drive a simple Fiio would do the job but they need some power to maximise their potential. If not the X1s are a good shout of you can get them for a good price but even better are Sonys MA900 which I've seen floating around for about £110 used.

Set yourself a proper budget and stick to it, theres always something different "for a little more".

Have a look over on headfi as well as theres some cracking headphones available for very cheap.

HD558 and remove the foam = 99% of the HD598 which is a definite upgrade over the HD555.

The HD555 and HD595 used the same drivers and also could be converted all you had to do was remove the foam on the HD555's. The 558 and 598 use a different grill from each other so it's not a direct conversion but they use the same drivers and have some foam in them too to degrade the SQ.

Basically if you get the HD558's and mod them you have yourself some cheap HD598's albeit they are black instead of cream and brown.

Mrk is selling his X1's on av forums with two cables.

Btw I have had the 555's for a few years now and I thought they were decent. This was until I got some x1's. They make the 555's feel like a kids toy. They sound great and are easy to drive. Really worth the upgrade for £130 mint used.
