Girl banned from school's restaurant treat for taking one day off - to attend MUM'S funeral

One of those daft situations where they've drawn a line and ultimately it's not turned out to be the best.

I can see why they've just withdrawn the idea - what happens next year when Sally's gran dies and she goes to a funeral? Does she get a free pass too? What about Jason's 2nd cousins funeral? The family dog? Mollies Goldfish?

There will always be that next family along that see leniency for something and demand for something similar and as soon as you start to give an inch they all want to take a mile.

If the reward scheme is going to cause a problem because parents are going to start complaining that their kid only missed 100% attendance because of X Y or Z etc. then I don't blame them for just not bothering.

I missed out on a 100% attendance award at secondary school for taking a 'day off' as part of the 'yearbook committee' who were given a teambuilding day by the school :p

Also I'm pretty sure your post was a joke, but just in case...

I'm also hoping it was, but with him, I'm unsure. "Trying not to get ill", and "In the working world you could be punished" - these are kids, with developing immune systems, in a room with 30 other people, any of whom could have some sort of bug that their body can't yet deal with.

Speaking from a teacher's perspective, I'd far rather my students didn't come in when they were sick. I'd be spending more time making sure they were ok, while worrying about myself or other students catching something too.

Maddie’s dad Andy is furious with St Giles’ Junior School in Bedworth, Warks, as teachers still refuse to apologise even after being told the reason behind her absence.
yea really teachers faults no one informed them .

You know I am basically skeptical of absolutely everything in news now. To the point I rarely pay any attention to anything

Day of the Malaysian plane coming down my gf says.. A plane has been shot down.. My instant reaction is.. Daily fail? I try to explain that where is the evidence and that that 'news' source just plays on dramatic headlines etc.. Not worth it
This often happens.. If she reads it somewhere it must be true. Benefits, animal cruelty, took jawwbs, etc.

People just don't think anymore. No one checks sources or questions it.

^ This exactly.

I mean come on, she couldn't help the fact that her mum died, and i'm sure she would be pretty shaken up already by that.

Wouldn't of hurt the school to show some sympathy towards her, I think it's madness if you ask me.

I think the more worrying thing is that the school didn't know that one of their 11 yr old pupils mothers had died. Do they not communicate with their pupils at all.

Why are people blaming the school for having a 100% attendance reward in order to try to meet targets imposed on schools?

There's no reason for the school to apologise to anyone. The people who decided to make this a media issue should be apologising to the school and the reporters should be apologising to everyone for writing inflammatory twaddle. Did anyone even bother talking to the school before talking to the media? I wonder how much the media paid them.

The school removing the reward isn't them throwing their toys out of the pram. Some people chose to make the reward scheme impossible, so the school had to remove it. It's their fault it's gone, not the school's fault.

St Giles said: “Following concerns raised, the rewarding of pupils for 100% attendance has been withdrawn.”

Sure, that will make everyone love her, the school I went to (Elementary) stopped doing Halloween parties because some parents didn't agree with it, ya that was wonderful. :sarcasm:

Pupil will likely not tell anyone, perhaps that their mums sick but nothing else than that. It's the parents job to inform the school and her dad should have done to make sure that she's given support. Schools are usually pretty good about it and will usually make sure the student is well looked after.

I agree with the decision - the 'reward' was a stupid idea to begin with, but I think they should have let it until next term to announce it rather than everyone blaming the poor girl now. Kids can be pretty cruel in those kinds of circumstances.

After actually reading the article I'm siding with the school.
The school were not informed of the reason for her absence until after the event.
As far as they knew she didn't have 100% attendance.
