Hi all,

Started upgrading an old E8500 PC last year with a Radeon 7870XT and also recently got a SSD. Makes sense now to pretty much start from scratch with a case, PSU, CPU, RAM, motherboard and HDD for extra storage. Was looking at the FX8350 but from what I can see there may not be any future potential upgrades for the motherboard but please correct me if I'm wrong. Instead started looking at a Z97 to work with a reasonable CPU to match the 7870XT for now with Broadwell being a future upgrade along with a new graphics card if needed. Looking to spend around £500, maybe less but that may not be possible. Not really in to overclocking and am looking to use for gaming, especially Battlefield.

Thanks for any help!

What monitor/screen resolution are you using? Also what OS?

BF4 is pretty well optimised for Intel and AMD CPUs. Assuming 1080p, you could save a huge amount of cash and go with the AMD FX 6300 (£72), as it performs just as well as an Intel 4770K (£246).

http://www.hardwarepal.com/battlefield-4-benchmark-mp-cpu-gpu-w7-vs-w8-1/8/ Look at the 7870 chart as that's very close to what you're using (convenient!).

Also notice that the improvement in performance going from Win 7 to Win 8 is larger than the performance difference between processors.

Some good info there, thanks.

Monitor is 1080p but I am thinking long term so could upgrade but not for a while. Currently using Win 7.

What is putting me off the AMD CPUs is longevity but have no preference either way as I was all set to get the FX8350 and parts but couldn't see any details of future plans.

As far as overclocking is concerned I have no problem having a go if there are some easy guides to help correct the wonky thinking :D

Looking to get fairly soon as although it is useful to have something to blame for my poor Battlefield skills it is killing the fun.

As you can afford it you are better of staying away from the FX series, to weak in single core performance, good if you have only £100 for a CPU though.

With a i7 you won't have any problems I wouldn't imagine for another 5 years, although that is just a guess as I can't predict the future :p (Even though I would like to be able to do)
