Seems to me, regardless of the school being informed 'after the event' as some posters are highlighting, that the school is failing pretty badly in its duty in loco parentis to be aware of a pupils circumstances.
Even if it is the families wish for everything to be as normal as possible by keeping the knowledge of an illness out of general circulation, it looks like a gross mishandling of the situation, with compassion superceded by bureaucracy.
The school should have known better in handling this one.
I'm sure there are many good schools out there, but I find it hard to believe that any of the schools I attended would have behaved in such an insensitive and, frankly petty, small minded manner, by imposing such an arbitrary punitive measure.
It shows a lack of foresight, compassion and understanding that, were it not so blatantly obtuse, would be amusing.

The school knew before the event...they simply didn't bother to check or failed to remember that her mother died just months ago. The girl was given a specific leave of absence to attend her mothers funeral by the school..the argument that they didn't know until after the dinner is nonsense.

What about those kids who try really hard but simply aren't as able as some other pupils?
Surely the most likely scenario is:
- The school and most/all teachers were aware of her absence due to her mother's funeral.
- When she was left off the 'list', there was maybe some doubt about whether she had some other absence during the year.
- A mistake was made.
We all know that teachers would remember if a child's parent has died. But are they expected to know off hand that it was their only absence. If an attendance 'list' was drawn up, then the assumption (by teachers involved) would be that she was not on the list because of other absences during the year and not because of an admin oversight.
I can't believe that (in the absence of more detail), people are jumping on the 'OMG outrage!!' bandwagon, rather than just accepting that a simple mistake was probably made.
