If you have british passport you can land in nearly any country on the planet and just give them a small fee and they will let you in for a few months.

Can you clarify what passport(s) you have? That will determine the visas needed.

If British then you'll need to go to the Vietnamese embassy in London. Be very, very careful with their opening times, and get there as early as possible as they will shut out queues of people after closing time.

Also allow plenty of processing time for the visa. You can never allow too much time for such things, as you never know what 'issues' may arise.

Not overly helpful. I can think of a few countries off the top of head where this doesn't apply

What about if you say its for business, do you still need to get a visa beforehand? To be honest i was not aware there was many countries that required visa before hand for short holiday or business trip.

You do not need a visa for Thailand if you are a British citizen. You can stay 1 month without one

http://vietnamembassy.org.uk/, if i remember correctly i downloaded the form them went on a jaunt to the embassy. They close for pretty much any national holiday going (Asia and uk) so best checked before/if you go
