Do you believe in evolution ?

What most people seem to not understand too is that their trust in science is based on faith that the people carrying out the work are doing it correctly.

I'm not saying they aren't, just that it IS another form of faith as the vast majority of people cannot verify the scientific things they preach about, but take it on good faith that it is true.

Scientific research is subject to peer review and is heavily scrutinised, they cannot wait to find a flaw in someone else's work.

So unless there is some huge conspiracy that they have agreed to all lie, then they are doing it correctly.

The theory of evolution is that humans came from descendents of ape-like animals who came from other species & this goes all the way back to coming from bacteria 3.8 billion years ago.

I am really curious how this thread will evolve. I really want to know the christian point of view, why they choose to believe in evolution or not. I see a lot of stereo types on tv and news. I don't think thats the actual representation of the christian faith, but more or less a small branch.

Hi Kedge.

I can't believe it's still debated. People who reject evolution should be ridiculed and laughed at.

Don't like it then go read a book and finally catch up to 2014.

Scientific methodology isn't based on faith but scepticism. We don't simply accept the results of experiments. The findings are peer reviewed and often repeated by others to see if the same results are observed.

I can't build a LHC in my back garden but I know that the any findings from the LHC at CERN have been peer reviewed and repeated before being accepted.

Pretty much this.

Yeah, I believe in Evolution.

Went to a wedding in Texas for a family friend a few years ago. The brainwashing of creationism there is just scary. They couldn't believe evolution etc was taught in UK schools, as Jesus wouldn't like it. Everything comes from Jesus in Texas. Even the shotgun racks in the back of every second pickup truck ;)

Wikipedia's view on the matter:

"Microevolution over time may lead to speciation or the appearance of novel structure, sometimes classified as macroevolution.[2] Contrary to claims by creationists however, macro and microevolution describe fundamentally identical processes on different time scales.[2][3]"

My grandfather was a minister for the CoI. My grandfather also supports completely the theory of evolution. Religious people who deny the ToE are idiots.

You can see evolution in organisms which have a high turnover rate.
It's easiest to observe directly in viruses and bacteria
I find a lot of people cannot cope with considering the huge time spans life has actually existed for due to our very limited lives. It's trying to put yourself out of the box you exist in. Numbers you don't come across day to day.

Look at our mitochondria. The most likely theory of how essentially a bacteria became a fundamental part of us and is in almost everything multicellular. This links all the way back down the tree of life to a very early layer. A much better classification than 5 kingdoms

How come we all have the same genetic code? It likely isn't the most efficient way of coding but all life has it.. Ie single event
I would love to be alive when we find life on other planets as to its coding structure

Reason for missing links.. Species diverge due to exploitation of niches mainly. Something that crosses two of these will be out competed by the truly optimized.

Even of you don't believe in one piece of evidence. There are so many it's hard to ignore

I mostly see these kind of representation from the christians unfortunately.

Also, do you guys believe in mavity? I don't personally, I've never seen a mavity. Have you?

Exactly - its just a scientific conspiracy to undermine god - more open minded scientists should also be conducting more research into intelligent falling... in fact we should be giving equal time to intelligent falling during physics lessons in our schools in order to give a truly balanced perspective. Just teaching 'mavity' without also informing kids of the alternative theories is very close minded.
