Non traditional board games

People may be interested to know that the digital Twilight Struggle project that GMT Games had to abandon has been turned over to Playdek and revived on Kickstarter. The campaign opened yesterday, hit the $50,000 goal in 90 minutes and is now over $100k. $10 gets you the game on Android, $15 on iOS, $30 on PC, and $75 plus shipping will get you a physical Deluxe Edition plus a digital copy on the format of your choice. PS4 and PS Vita are available for an additional $10 on the PC/physical levels.

Played Kemet for the second time on Wednesday. It remains excellent, I look forward to the expansion due later this year.

I also picked up Eminent Domain, a deckbuilding game. It's quite low in interaction - the only way other players affect you is in whether you follow their lead to get free actions or dissent to draw more cards - but there's a clear variety of strategies available. Looking forward to getting it on the table.

Mice and Mystics isn't worth its RRP, from what I hear it doesn't have much replay value.

Who won Letters From Whitechapel? I've also got it on the table once and narrowly scraped a win as Jack.

It has new content from $0.99 though so factoring that in it seems fun enough to me but I will look in to it more. I've not checked if there is fan content though.

Jack won letters. I had the hide locked down and Jack blocked on night 3. I got impatient and moved though and then a rules application error that my wife 'forgot' about all of a sudden let her special move straight in to the hide and I didn't query it. :D

Is this the group that meets in the church in Shieldfield?

Yes it is.

Have you played Cyclades? If so are they similar in mechanics?

AKA "your wife cheated". Jack cannot use a special move to go home.

I haven't played Cyclades, but I'm told the two games are completely different in mechanics.

I know you can't. I just didn't notice due to rules overload at the specific time. To be fair, I think it was a genuine mistake. I also think it is going to be one of those games you can't get a real feel for early on - i.e. no bragging rights for the first 4-5 games :D

Just ordered Race for the galaxy :D

Awesome,

In case you get to wondering, there are two separate sets of expansions. The first two of the set of three expansions are worth purchasing.

There is also another separate expansion from the first 3.

The general moan from BGG is that all the expansions offer more cards (great), but all offer pretty pointless rules as well.

The first two of the original three offer decent enough accompanying rules that you might want to consider them.

I have RFTG, still yet to learn how to play it. Will probably get to it in the next few weeks. Got like 10+ new games to learn yet. lol.

One that we last played and loved was Power Grid. Such a good game.

Coincidence, played RFTG last night for the first time. The rule book seemed nonsensical before playing so we just went for it, took two hours with constant checks but by the end I think we understood it!

I am really looking forward to playing it again.

Playing Relic at the moment. Very simple mechanics so easy to get to grips with but also quite in depth.
Its a Warhammer based (very limited knowledge in this area) with each player against the board although you can upset other players by taking their stuff if you get the chance.

Think I'll buy a copy at some point

Relic is, in my opinion, a huge improvement over Talisman (the game it is based on). It gives you more direction with missions that count to something (gaining Relics). It gives you the option of choosing from different 'adventure' cards based on your stats and other improvements.

Some would argue it is still down to roll and move luck but I think the new mechanics lessen that and Talisman is still good.

Never tried Talisman but my friends have it so its one for next time.

Zombicide
Ticket to Ride (Europe)
Eldritch Horror

brother bought Munchkin the other day. played first game of it this weekend as our new attempt to do more stuff not involving tech.

really enjoyed it, felt like it needed more monsters though so going to by the expansion packs, will have a look through this thread at some more ideas for new games

Zombicide is a good game. Smallworld is decent too. Aside from boardgames though I think Magic: The Gathering is probably the best tabletop game out there.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not spend more money on Munchkin until you've played a few other games recommended in the thread. Once you have, there's a very good chance you won't want to play Munchkin any more and you'll have wasted your money.

If I haven't pimped it already, I'll pimp Quantum at you now. It's a bit expensive for what it is, but it's a very clever little game. It works excellently with two but scales well to four, and it's only 7-10 minutes per player so it can be played in a lunch break.

Shock news from Germany, as this year's Spiel des Jahres turns out to be good. Camel Cup (also known as Camel Up due to an ambiguous logo and no mention of its name in the rulebook) is a fast game for 3-8 players where you bet on a camel race. Each camel moves once per stage and you bet on who will be first and second after all camels have moved, and you also bet on which camel will be first and last at the end of the race. The trick is, if two camels end up sharing a space then they stack with whichever camel came from behind on top, and if a camel in a stack moves all the camels on top of it move as well.

The whole game plays in 20-30 minutes and is suitable for ages 8+, though there's a recommended variant for younger children where you remove the betting and just race the camels to see who wins.

Fluxx

Has anyone ever played any of the Fluxx games such as Cthulhu Fluxx? I've seen them around but never tried one. Just wondering if I am missing out.

If anyone has played it please let me know what you think.

Also...Whats the thing with Munchkin? I see a lot of this also but not played it, any good?

Fluxx is a silly game for filling ten minutes with. There's no strategy or thinking involved. Monty Python Fluxx is probably the best edition. ;)

Another relatively light-hearted game. It's funny for a while but don't expect deep strategy.

I have Cthulhu Fluxx. It's good fun, but as far as I understand all of the different versions are just the same game with a pasted theme. It's best with 3+ players, I think, and works as a nice little filler in between other games. A game can be over in 5 minutes or 20, all depending on which goals are pulled out (or 'Ungoals' in the Cthulhu one, also -- it's possible for nobody to win, there!)
