Retro hatchback ideas?

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Astra GTE? The 309 Gti is essentially a better 205 bar looks and a lot cheaper. You also have a lot from the Renault stable. Although I would hazard a guess R5T's are going up in price as well.

I always liked the Vauxhall nova sri/gsi's but doubt you'll get a decent gsi for 1k

trouble with French cars is they break a lot, italian too

At the moment a recon Saxo VTSs and Ford Pumas have probably bottomed out value wise.

I doubt you'll get one for a grand but if you want retro how about an Alfa 33 or a Sud Sprint. They're not fast by modern standards, but they do tick the retro box.

:p

309 GTI is now much rarer than the 205 and good ones are hard to find. Astra GTEs are scarce and expensive. You'll be doing very well indeed to get any of those in even half decent condition for a grand.

unless you want to pay big money then look at 'project' cars or spares and repairs. MOT fails etc. dont know as much about the 205 but with the golf the parts are cheaper than cheap and they're stupidly easy to work on.

plenty of great rags to riches for very little money examples on the forums

this is a great example because all the kid has done is stick some nice wheels on and polish the hell out of it with the addition of rattle can paint.

this one was on a budget too http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4828

both great when you go from page 1 to the end and both cars that people would ignore on ebay

I've got a 306gti6 I really should sell :p

2000 Astor grey (rare dirty black) 88k. Let me know if you're interested, need to mot it etc, passed last year and hasn't moved since.

Some great suggestions but I think as a few people have mentioned my budget is quite low for what I am after. I like the offer of the 306 though but I'm not in any rush to go out and buy.

I think I might open up the criteria to coupes, then I can start considering the 406, gtv and Prelude hmm :)

I probably won't get around to it until at least September. I've owned it 10years and it hasn't moved in 2years (was fully serviced and mot'd last year with the intention to sell.. but I didn't!)

Can't be bothered to read the thread but £1k is fine for an ok Golf to be honest, might need a bit of work but unless you're spending a few £k, they all will really.

Have a look over on Mk2 Owners and ClubGTI sale sections:

My Golf is slowly being worked on when I have the time and pick bits up, great fun car and to be honest, much prefer it over 205s I think. I found that even shabby 205s had high asking prices when I was looking last year so I quite quickly went off the idea of getting another and decided to go down the Golf route (always wanted one and grown up around 205s).

My brother has a 205 he should be selling but I think he has too high an asking price on a car with no MOT or tax and still needs some work doing to it which he just hasn't bothered to do. Shame really as it's just sat in our parent's garage collecting dust and looking sorry for itself. I could have had that car but as he wouldn't give a family discount I decided to go look at cars that were already road legal. :p

I'll just leave these here....

Im surprised a CRX hasnt been mentioned yet.

For pure fun i would recommend a volvo 340/360. RWD little hatch that capable of going sideways quite easily. Trouble is most of them lack grunt, i had a 360 with the largest 2.0 renault engine and it had no power. upgrading to a 2.3 turbos can be done and will cure that though. the 1.7's can easily be swapped to a better clio engine too.

I miss my xr2. Was a good car, travelled to Christchurch to pick that one up! Not sure you'll get one in good condition for 1k though.
