Retro hatchback ideas?

You can install a supercharger that will give 450hp but the head can flow for that as it is so its very free flowing.

A bolt on charger that will produce 450bhp? For how long?!

You need to spend some serious pennies to get a reliable 450 brake out of that lump.

Not as retro as Mk2 Golfs etc, but hello:

4ve954il.jpg

Standard they're a 1.3 litre turbocharged, 130bhp in something that weighs 840-860kg dry depending on OE spec. Absolute hoot to drive.

Mine (the above example), is now on 162bhp -172bhp (depending on which rolling road). They're not the best handlers from stock. Really need a rear anti-roll bar and uprated shocks and springs to be really able to chuck them about with confidence. I'm on coilovers but no RARB yet, so I can feel the back end wanting to step out at times when I pile into corners.

Can't be bothered to read the thread but £1k is fine for an ok Golf to be honest, might need a bit of work but unless you're spending a few £k, they all will really.

I don't mind one that needs a bit of work, so long as it's a runner and can get me about. I've had a look at owners clubs classifieds but I still think a Gti for 1k is a big ask, especially if I start getting fussy about only having 3 doors as well!

You'd be surprised to be honest, stick up a wanted ad on the forums stating budget etc and you'll have some offers (might take a week or two).

When I bought mine (Dec '13, was looking from Sept ish) I spent over that but had quite a few offers for cars at or around the 1k mark via mk2Owners....I however hadn't checked my thread much so missed the offers and bought elsewhere for a bit more.

If you've got the ability to wait I do think you can find a decent car, eBay is quite good for them as is Gumtree, just make sure not to buy from super dodgy people and post up threads on the forums (mk2, 205, whatever you pick/look at) asking for thoughts on a car's value etc.

Good call with the wanted ads. I'm in no rush at all to buy which is probably the best thing in my favour.

Might look for both the 205 and golf but the golf is a bit of personal hero so I might try a bit harder on that front (despite what I mentioned in the op).

In Yate and has a sub with 6x9s and only a picture of the inside. NO THANKS LOL.

It's close so he can go have a look and see if it's worth it. For £1k you're not going to find much except bottom of the barrel anyway. Even a stretch to £2500 will see nice examples like this although it's in Derry. You could also get a MK3 for £1150.

2.5k for that mk2, hahaha, pull the other one.

Some quick looking as given me this list (some are 5dr, some are 3dr) and I've not properly read the ads.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201405043918553 - granted not t&t and 5dr
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201407236033750 - lovely seats....over £1k but can always barter down remember :p
http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/cars-for-sale/vehicles/golf-gti-8v/ - too much I know but that's better than the 2.5k 5dr and is cheaper.

So yeah, I'd say it's doable for a mk2 for £1000, certainly sub £1500 but as I say, post up on forums for a better range, you often get people selling that haven't advertised or are about to sell who will offer.

Doable for 1k so long as you're willing to take on cars that aren't taxed, aren't tested, might not get an MOT, might not even start or have close to 200k miles. I think I'd rather have the MK3 GTi than any of those.

Because a 205 for £800 in Yate with no exterior pics and tax running out tomorrow is a sure fire safe bet....

I'd rather save up more and not buy the worst GTI ever.

Calm down, he didn't mention the mk4 GTI with less power than my mk2. :D

Miles don't really mean much though in all honesty, especially on the 8v engines provided they've been serviced as they are decent strong things. 200k on a 1991 car would be an average of 8600pa...not exactly a huge chunk of miles. Most of the 'high miles' cars will also have done most of them in their first few years too, so provided they've been vaguely looked after for the past while they will be fine and have done minimal mileage over the more recent years.

If you want a low mileage car, open up your wallet and pay for something that can still shaft you because bodywork and other expensive stuff just deteriorates regardless of mileage.. If you want something cheap and usable, buy on condition and servicing history.

Milage doesn't bother me as long as the car has been looked after, plenty of receipts etc.

The Mk3 doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.
