windows 8.1 annoyance

I'm setting up a couple of new off the shelf PC's for the numpties at work.
On one of the PC's the start screen has this in the top RH corner

The other doesn't have the 'power button' or the 'search' icon.

How do I get rid of the icons. It's annoying me.

Is that not inlcuded in 8.1 as opposed to 8?

I think that there was an update or something for this.
Have you tried googling?

You can't.
And any without those icons need updates.

Both PC's were purchased at the same time and are identical. Windows 8.1 was pre-installed.
My google-fu is failing me on this which is why I'm asking here.
I'm thinking I've done something as I set them up but I can't figure out what!

One PC (the one with the icons) has 8.1 Update 1, the other just has Windows 8.1.

Short of not installing 8.1 Update 1 there is no way of removing the icons (but I read Microsoft will be stopping support for 8.1 minus Update 1, so just put up with them).
