Overheated CPU - Water pump gone?

Built this pc in my sig a couple of months ago and had no problems with it apart from some noises I could not seem to get rid of. It took a while to determine that a rattling buzz was caused by the plastic shroud of the R9 280x (apparently a common design flaw).

Until the last 2-3 weeks I have had a constant loud buzzing which sounded like my water pump. In this time I have had the side panel off to make it easier to work out where the noises were coming from.

The last 3 days the PC was on constantly and this morning I woke up, turned the monitor on and Windows was very unresponsive. Turned computer off, then back on and noticed it was more silent. At POST I had a error about CPU overheat press F1 to enter BIOS. Did this and the CPU was reported at 89c and in the red :o

My initial thought is something to do with the water pump because of all the noise it has been causing. Any ideas what could do this, and do you think any damage may have been done to the CPU?

It could well be - how are you cooling your CPU? Custom Loop or AIO?

Its a custom kit (XSPC Raystorm EX280) I had to put together, the pump is a pump/reservoir combo that sits in two bay drives.

You can see the build log here for more info: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18603290

I am 100% sure it is the pump now, turned it on, no pump noise, the front reservoir shows the coolant level and it is not moving (no mini waves so to speak).

Time to contact Overclockers for a RMA. Hopefully the i7 was not damaged :o

Wonder if they could refund for the whole kit? And then I could just go back to air and buy some other components maybe.

Doubt it mate, perhaps the pump manufacturer will pay out something but not the whole price of damaged components :(

mt 4770K gets to about 80-85 within a minute from cold when I erm, kinda erm forgot to plug the pump in. definitely sounds like the pump to me.

Just my luck

After the RMA was given and ordered a temporary Xigmatek Heatsink the pump has now decided to start working again.

I moved it out the front of the tower and pushed it back in, so whether something had come loose and now it has reconnected inside maybe I don't know - the annoying thing is it is even runing a lot more silent :p

Completely dead this morning and by afternoon decided to work again, just my luck!

Right now it seems to be working better then ever oddly enough :D

I would still rma it just in case. You never know when it will crap out again!

I would but its just such a chew on, especially since it means buying more tubing and coolant. So I think I will ride it out and see how it goes for now...
