Is this possible, on some cheap short term policy, ie a few weeks? The Focus has a weeks grace thanks to my insurance company. Trouble is, I may need to keep it slightly longer than that and AFAIK, you need insurance even if the car won't be driven. It has current tax and MOT.

I believe you can get fire and theft only policies though you will need to ring insurers and ask about this, without the third party element if will probably be quite cheap even if you do have to take out a year policy and pay cancellation charges.

For a few weeks I'd risk it tbh as you will get a warning letter first later followed by a fine. Less than a month probably isn't long enough for the fine to come through. Or you can SORN it (if it is in your driveway not on the road) and get the tax refunded, then insurance isn't required.

I briefly looked into this for a classic mini i'm doing up and unless it's a valuable classic no one seemed to offer anything worth while, for me it would have been far cheaper to have a regular car policy with 1000 mile limit. In the end it just SORN'd it and didn't bother.

So the government introduce a stupid rule yet there's no obligation for insurance companies to offer competitive short term policies. Figures.

I've just renewed the tax as well.

So SORN the car, then do I have to send in the tax disc? And when I put it back on the road, fill in an online form then job done?

Sorry for the noob question but does a car have to be insured if it's taxed, MOTd, "off the road" and not being driven? What are the consequences if it isn't insured? How long do you get to insure it before you receive a fine (that's if you do receive a fine)?

If it's taxed it needs to be insured.
You'll get a warning after a few weeks then a fine a couple of weeks later.

I have a laid up policy on the porsche, cost me £30 for the year as long as it is kept overnight in a locked garage.

edit: Forgot to mention that the car is also SORN.

Not really. Introduced in June 2011

That's fairly new. Any links to the legislation? It seems rather stupid, to me.

In 2012 I had my taxed Golf GTi parked off the road and uninsured for a couple of months before I sold it. I didn't receive any correspondence about that
