4k VS 1440p for gaming

It is really quite subjective. But from my experience '4K' is a developing technology in its early stages. It's something that will get better with time, when the software and graphics hardware catches up properly. When that does happen there will be a broader choice of '4K' monitors available and they will likely perform better in some areas than the Acer.

The ROG Swift on the other hand is something that the software is completely ready for. And although running the 2560 x 1440 resolution at high frame rates is very demanding I still feel some higher end GPUs can make a good go of it - depends on the settings you want to use and games you play really. There is still good headroom in that monitor if you don't have a super-powerful multi-GPU setup as well.

I play normally FPS bf4 and such, a few MMO's starcraft2 and WOD,

If I went 4k id buy

1 x Asus ROG Swift PG278Q 27" G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor - Black/Red £695.99
Total : £705.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Id just use my 780 just now to see what the new Nvidia bring to the market, if th 800 series is crap then id probably just buy another 780 and add them both to my WC loop?

The same way that those who criticise the ROG Swift can't afford them either right?

I've already said the ROG is the best to go for if you can afford it, I would have got the ROG but £440 for the 4k seems better future proofed value and I didn't have the extra £250.

You don't need to spend £900 to run a 4k monitor.

Agreed

Well I asked the same question

I have just upgraded to a 780 ti .
I went for the rog as I read reviews at the 140 hz was going to be better.
I have a 4 k Samsung tv. That I bought 4 months ago and still waiting to watch something in 4k.

You wasted your money on the Samsung 4k TV, you won't being using its main feature for a long time yet. Gaming at 4k however its ready now.

Your 780 will struggle to produce 60FPS+ in most modern games on 1440p, I'd add another one to that basket of yours, bringing the price right up of course.

So what gfx would run the 4k or 1440p at very good frame rates (for the foreseeable future)?

I know one 780 would have problems but the g sync will help me out, I did say it would only be one card until the new cards are out, if their crap id be adding another 780 :)

You'll probably need 2 cards for "very good frame rates", by all means test your card to start with but 2X780 will eat 1440p for breakfast, for 4K though I think you'll run out of Vram with a 3Gb card.

My 7990 is amazing at 4K, it hasn't struggled with any game I've played so far, with every setting maxed out.

Sorry should have specified which NVidia gfx set up would handle the 4k setup, as no point in buying a G sync monitor and getting an AMD card

4K isn't worth it yet.

The GPU grunt to run games at that resolution requires a lot of spending, plus there's the fact that windows DPI scaling is still terrible. Don't expect a Macbook kind of sharpness, it just isn't happening (yet).

(My 7970 maxes out pretty much every games at 60fps on 1440p, by the way).

Save your money and wait for the technology to mature.

Have you witnessed a 4K screen in use?

Everything is crystal clear and sharp.

And why do people keep saying you need to spend £££'s to play @ 4K?

My GPU cost me £350 and i haven't noticed any stuttering, FPS drops etc..

I play BF3 + 4, Farcry 3, COD: Ghosts, all maxed out @ 4K.

I have.

Windows DPI scaling just isn't there yet. Try using a lot of applications and you'll find everything stupidly tiny, unless you get a massive 4k screen. If you're getting a 4k screen you better play nothing but games on it, or be prepared to squint until MS can actually do decent DPI scaling like Apple does.

780ti would be good, two would be amazeballs

Like I said in my last thread the only people that say this 4k isnt ready are the people that can't afford 4k, and I dont mean the hardware to run it.

Everything Windows can be DPI scaled to your choice, and so can 90% of applications, the only thing Ive noticed is a bit off is my old version of utorrent. You clearly have been round your mates house and been a bit jealous, spend more time with it.

Not a great image (best I could do without proper equipment to hand) but 1080p scaled to 4K on the left, native 1080p on the right.

Enough to show that its not terrible (atleast on this AOC) but there is some slight softening of the image.

Your bias is showing far too much with the way you word your posts.

High PPI scaling in windows 8.1 is still not great and that's pure fact - maybe you're okay with it, but me and a lot of other users are not. Within windows it works... okay. For apps it is totally dependent on the app in question and a lot are simply not ready yet.

Well I did have proper equipment and I never posted any in my review of the Samsung because I couldn't get anything that really represented what I was seeing :(. From the image the AOC looks a bit better than the Samsung, perhaps. On the Samsung I still dislike this softening in-game and don't see it as a particularly worthwhile resolution to run the monitor in, it just makes everything look a bit poor and 'wrong'. The Samsung at least handled 2560 x 1440 reasonably well, but again not with the same edge sharpness as native 2560 x 1440.
