Am making a user selectable controller that I hope will have 8 different selections. I want to add an LED to each selection so when you select say number 3 and you turn the control knob to 3 the led then lights up and so forth for the the other numbers/outputs/selections.

I think 5 mm LED will be fine. This device will be used outside and in the sun when it's out so need something bright.

To keep it all clean looking as well as there will be an option for all 8 to be used at once and again I'd like this to be all displayed, ie select all and all the LED's are on, I plan to use just the one color. Blue or white is what I had thought of as the box is black.

Anyone able to suggest the type of LED I will need. Power source is 12v

Thanks

Standard 5mm lens super bright 20mA nominal should fine. Blue and white variants are crazy bright if viewed within its 20-30 degree cone of light.

I use these with a 5v supply and they're plenty bright. Other colours are available and these come with a nice quality bezel for easy mounting and resistor pre-fitted.

You may find them too bright but all you need do in that case is add an additional resistor in series. You will of course need a resistor in series with those standard 18000mcd LEDs. Something like 100 Ohm for a 5v supply, 470 Ohm for 12v supply.

As Feek mentions sometimes it's worth getting LEDs with resistors already in the package. They'll be marketed as 5v, 12v or whatever voltage LEDs. Not sure I'd be happy to pay £1.62 + vat for a single LED though, even if it does come in a nice package and with bezel as those can easily be purchased separately if your project needs them.

You need to be a bit careful there, I've had LEDs with resistors and the wires are too thick due to the resistors to actually fit in the bezels!
