I was using a slim hob filter on a nano fish only marine tank that has packed up.

I have an unused filter here and was wondering would it be okay to use in a saltwater tank?

thanks for any advice

The Aqua-Internal 50 filter is suitable of filtering up to 50 litres of aquarium water. This model is an efficient and quiet dual action internal aquarium filter. The compact Aqua-Internal 50 filter is ideal for use in all types of coldwater and tropical aquariums.

The dual action filter cartridge, contained within the filter, consists of the 3 forms of filtration: mechanical, biological and chemical. The fully open structure filter foam provides optimal mechanical filtration and creates a vast bacterial growth area. The chemical filtration section of the cartridge includes Norit ® active carbon to remove organic contamination, chemicals and dyes from the water.

Employing the ‘Easy-Clean Click System’ ensures that filter cleaning and maintenance is very quick and easy- replacement filter cartridges can be changed with little mess or stress. For the best results and water conditions, we recommend replacing the aqua-internal filter cartridge every month.

For the ultimate filtration and water chemistry, we would highly recommend using the unique 6-stage Aqua Internal ‘Crystal clear’ filter cartridges. Designed to be used with all the Aqua-Internal filter models (excluding the Aqua-Internal filter XL), the Aqua-Internal ‘Crystal Clear’ filter cartridge consists of:

Fully open structure filter foam, providing optimal mechanical filtration
Fully open structure filter foam creates a vast bacterial growth area for efficient biological filtration
‘Clean Water’ to aid the removal of nitrate
Norit ® Active Carbon to remove organic contamination, chemicals and dyes
Zeolite to remove harmful ammonia and heavy metals
‘Active Alumina’ to help remove silicates and phosphates from the water- these being an essential nutrient for unsightly algae growth.

That filter is for fresh water and tropical fish, not salt water fish.

You will be much better off using liverock inside the aquarium and a hob skimmer.

I would be tempted to take out the ocean rock, put in around 4kg of liverock and then just change 5 litres of water a week.
Do you have a powerhead for water movement?

I dont mind spending more than these, however the say for salt water tanks.

what do you think? thanks for all your help btw.

No worries, i'm by no means an expert but have kept marine fish for around 4 years now.

If you're dead set on going for a filter like this then you would have to clean the sponge every couple of days. A skimmer is what you really need, as it takes all the crap from the tank and puts it in a cup that you empty.

I have a 100l tank for my 2 clownfish and with live rock, regular water changes and the skimmer everything has been fine.

BTW if you're not registered on ultimatereef, you should sign up. That place has all the information you will ever need.
