Now Gamescom 2014 includes quite a lot of Geforce GTX events with different partners all with the same tag as above, so I am not really sure what to make of the ‘Grand Finale’. In all probability its nothing of importance, but there is chance that we will learn something about the upcoming GTX 880. I very much doubt its the actual reveal since that is queued for mid September, according to latest reports, but is this the point when Nvidia will reveal the existence of said reveal (semantics, wow)? If I were to put it into probabilities I would say there is a 60% chance its random PR stuff and 40% chance of information pertaining to the GTX 880.
gtx geforce grand finale gamescomNow my first reaction was: this is probably something related to Nvidia’s Shield but upon closer inspection that doesn’t seem to be the case. Notice the excerpt above from the full schedule over at Nvidia’s page. This shows the description that was on all preceding GTX Geforce events. The Nvidia Shield Tablet events have a different description and this ‘Grand Finale’, whatever it is has something to do with GTX Geforce ie. Graphic Cards. Then there is the fact that Nvidia has been teasing about this event on their face book pages for a very long time, where very long is defined as 17 July last month.
Gigabyte Launching GTX 880 G1 Series in Early October
Remember when we told you, before anybody else I might add, that you will get your hands on the new graphic cards around Early October? Well, turns out the new Gigabyte Maxwell series, dubbed the “GTX 880 G1 Gaming” is going to be launching in that approximate time frame. In an interview by EXPReview.com we now know the naming scheme of the AIB Gigabyte and the fact these new cards will feature the same cooling solution used by ASUS Strix. Namely, almost no sound under mediocore load. Lastly, If Nvidia is preparing a separate event reveal for the Geforce GTX 880 Maxwell GPU then this is the place to tell us about it and maybe, just maybe throw us a few tidbits on the upcoming flagship.

I would say a pinch of salt but does sound legit. So October (2 months) for the 880GTX G1  I have no aspirations of this being anything other than a reworked 680 but with better power efficiency, better optimisation, higher clocks and possibly DX12 fully compatible?

Reworked 680?

That would be done already with the 770, did you mean reworked 780?
Nvidia may call it the GTX880 and GTX870, but we all know they are really just "GTX860Ti" and "GTX860" in terms of spec, as they are not the big Maxwell...

Architecture wise, the GTX880 would be more similar to the GTX680 on the 256-bit bus than the GTX780 on the 384-bit bus...

The early rumors suggest it is a 256bit bus and pretty much a 680/770 but with refinements. I am sure it will be a cracking card but if the rumors of that small bus are true, this doesn't have me too excited. Of course rumors are just that and could be a mile off.

Hi All,

Just to confirm, this isnt a "new chipset" ? just a tweaked version of the "current gen"?

Cheers for confirming/advising,
S

The 750Ti is Maxwell, which is technically a new architecture but still Kepler with tweaks. For this, we will have to wait for official release info before claiming anything :)

Thanks mate :)

Want to do a complete new build once "next gen" GPU's are released, will have to wait to read more on these.

Would be a nice upgrade for those still on 600 series, but if you already own a 780 or above probably best sticking with it till full fat Maxwell. This is what ill likely do, add in another cheap 780 to tide me over.

After the underwhelming annocement of Shield Tablet its good to see Nvidia going back to basics. Hopefully it will be a lot cheaper thn current gen cards and overclockable with unlocked voltage.

Hi setter, yes l'v the upgrade itch but l'll wait and see what they are like>880.

As my SLI 4GB 670'S still do the job and l'm just running them stock.

An interesting element to this story is AMD's response to the 880, we know they have the 290XTX waiting in the wings but it's just a factory OC apparently. If AMD believe this is all they need to counter 880 then it's rather telling.

However, AMD do like to troll NV and bring out surprises like Hawaii, so perhaps we'll get lucky or at the very least they'll let slip some juicy details about Pirate Islands. Fingers crossed things get exciting again soon.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jen and Rory were having lunch and discussing what they should do to fill the gap whilst waiting for 20/16nm.... And here we are :D
