It's often remarked on these forums that 8Gb is plenty for a gaming rig... And I've always agreed :)

But just now whilst playing Thief that little box popped up saying there's not enough RAM.

Anybody else experienced this? Is it simply not enough capacity or the fact that it's only 1600MHz?

8GB is plenty. I play many games and never had a issue with low RAM, I always have had a GB or two spare at least.

Have you got a lot of applications in the background?

Games rarely use more than 2 gigabytes, and with background processes etc its like 5gb used in total. Speed has nothing to do with it but if I were you id load up thief and then get task manager up (ctrl+shift+esc) and see which processes use the most memory

8GB memory is plenty for today's games and for a while yet. It most likely is a memory leak or a mass of background applications. Check the full 8GB is available and registering correctly.

I haven't seen any game that I play get above 6GB so far. 8GB will be enough for some time to come yet. Is your RAM functioning correctly, never had an issue with Thief on 8GB?

Get a screenshot if it happens agian..

That sounds really odd, they normally don't give out warnings like that, especially for RAM..

Did it say RAM or memory, it could have meant hard drive space, if you were installing or downloading something at the time.

Is it possible it's referring to graphics card memory? Which card are you using?

That little box, is it the one to do with the windows graphics need adjusting? If so that's vram not main ram. I have had that quite a few times after exiting certain games.

I didn't really take much notice tbh, I just closed the box and opened up OCUK for a bit of RAM shopping :D

I'll get on Thief again and hope it happens again... It was definitely RAM though not VRAM or system memory. It's the same little box I had pop up when I lent my bro 4Gb when he needed some RAM.

Full system spec;
3770k
Z68XP-UD4
2x4Gb Team Group Elite 1600MHz RAM
430Gb of SSD storage with 140Gb used
MSI 780 Lightning
Seasonic X-series 660W

All under water and running at stock.

I had that graphics message and hadn't even been playing games.

Something definitely wasn't right as I've got 16GB (for no good reason) and it was all showing as being used, but even closing Chrome which had loads of tabs open didn't get my RAM back. Only a reboot did.

edit: funnily enough i just came downstairs to use my PC which i switched on a few hours ago and never got round to using, that very message was showing. 15.3GB of RAM in use but nothing shwoing in processes. Closed Raptr, which i never use anyway, and the RAM usage dropped to 3GB.

Can't say for sure it was that yet, but.....

edit 2: Just did a quick Google, http://raptr.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24601

8GB isn't enough for me now because Planetside 2 my main game that I play has a dirty memory leak, I often end up with 500mb remaining.

I don't think games will "need" 12GB-16GB RAM until at least 2017, except where poor memory management comes into play.

It might help a bit for those gaming at the very high end but they probably already run on 32GB+.
