Need help choosing a new car

Amraam - The one you linked to is indeed fishy. It should not have the complete Perspex front end. There should be a grill there.

Head on over to civinfo.com and read the wiki to know what you should be getting at that age!

Actually perhaps I should give some owner feedback if you're keen on the civic.

The ride quality is pretty poor compared to any vag range car, as far as clunks and bumps go. If you don't fancy that then do not buy one.

The car seems well put together, and the 1.8 I-vtec is a good engine for what it is. Expect to see 43/44mpg indicated driving like miss daisy, but the fuel computer is optimistic at that and in reality is around 40 (my experience of B road trips to work and back around here). The torque curve is pretty flat (what little torque there is) but the engine rewards when you push it harder.

The magic seats in the 5 door are a blessing and make carrying all sorts of objects fantastically easy. The 3 door has different suspension and a wider rear track than the 5 door, I found it to handle pretty well.

Reliability is meant to be good on the I-vtec lump and if I were to replace my current car with another civic it would definitely be the petrol and not another diesel lump. As it is, my contract with work is due to come to an end, so I probably will end up in another civic!

Holy hell those things are poor value for money!

Especially when the design is actually over 10 years old (2003 the 8P came out iirc) and has been facelifted twice.

+1.

Get one with decent spec and a decent engine and you'll be happier for longer..not one with sub 25k mileage, crappy equipment and a gutless engine.

As said, the same car has been out since 2003 (you can even retrofit most new components to the older pre-facelift versions).

I love my 2.0TFSI A3, had a stupid amount of problems with it because of oil pump failure but that seems like a rare instance. Servicing wise, it's good value but not surprising considering it's a 'posh' Golf. I've been looking at replacements for a little while now but can't bring myself to get rid of it, a mixture of not finding my next purchase and really just liking the car.

Get the right one and you'll enjoy it. I'd stop being fussy over age and mileage.

Nah 1.4 turbo petrol is alright, won't set the world alight but won't struggle either.

Having said that how is a 5-6 year old car still worth £10k? Still worth >50% of original purchase price - that's crazy!

The old man had a 2007 1.4 turbo.

I quite liked it. Quick enough and was a very quiet and refined engine. But he had problems with the cam chain that cost him a fair bit and fairly common. Bought audis for years (first one Audi 80 estate) so they gave him some contribution towards costs and a decent trade in against a new model but had to fight for it :(

I hate car shopping, absolutely loathe it. Can't help it but it really stresses me out. I just naively think that a newer car with more miles is likely going to have less issues, than older with more. Not a fact, but given the odds a fair rule to go by don't you think?

Things like nav etc aren't crucial - I use google maps on my phone and I can always get a Zenec or other HU depending on the car. Cruise control and climate control would be pretty high up on the list though

Nope, I'm just (probably naively) thinking that Audi, being premium, will be more reliable.

I'll look into VWs too...

They actually use the same components underneath, so it's definately worth a look. I have a skoda, and quite a few times now when I've pulled stuff off the car (or just noticed the writing on bits) it has audi, VW + seat branding on it.

Just think of it as getting much the same package with a crappier badge on it.

That seems like a lot of car for not a lot of money?

Edit : How about a focus?

It's ex mobility. It's sort of pristine, but has a few wear and tear marks from the smoker that used to own it - not gonna lie and say that's not partly why I didn't buy it...

Looked at them, but the 12.6 is abysmal at 12s to 60. Want something that's at least slightly fun to drive.

Look at the second picture then look at the price ofn the car and wonder in amazement at how anyone could ever have thought that was an acceptable interior

OP looks at 1.4 povery spec Audi A4 1.3

OcUK suggests he buys a Leon Cupra.

Nice One !

Well... he said something fun and he didn't mention anything about engine size restriction (horse power either...).

Edit

But I must admit that... I got carried away a little bit. :p

Leon isn't a bad shout. Just not the Cupra yeah :D

This has lots and lots of toys

2012 with less than 40k. Considering the platform sharing the leon does with the A3..... much better value I think.

This one has:

Bluetooth,
Cruise Control,
Electric adjustable/heated/folding door mirrors,
8 Speakers
Ipod connection
Xenons
Adaptive front headlights
Dual Zone Climate
Cornering Fog Lights
Media Pack (including Sat Nav)
Convenience pack meaning
Auto headlights
Auto wipers
Auto dimming rear view mirror.
