4k VS 1440p for gaming

The interpolation process, at least on the current 28" models, does not work that way in practice. The sharpness is not comparable to a native 1920 x 1080 display. To the OP and anybody else interested I'd highly recommend reading the U28D590D review and accompanying 'UHD experience' article on my website.

Nice review and a very good read. Your testing is excellent as always :)

since the asus rog swift is nearly 700 pounds and the new acer 4k is 500

Im wondering what the pros and cons for each side is.

From what people tell me ......

4k is gorgeous but you need a descent setup and some thing about things being small or the mouse shooting about the screen.

1440 a lot say it is the happy medium

so any advice is appreciated?

Get the Acer 4K with Gsync, since you have a GTX780.
I do also have similar card with you, and going to buy the monitor before I make my decision regarding the card. It will play the games want without AA, and tested that the VRAM will hold with ultra settings. Any low fps will be sorted by the gsync module.
The I will make my decision for switch on 2 GTX780 6GB, get another 780 3GB from MM or wait.

Someone mentioned that 4K isn't that more pixels than 1440p. It is 2.25 times more pixel.
1440p has 3686400 pixels at 27"
4K has 8294400 pixels at 28".

I have been using 1440 res for gaming for the past year and its a nice step up from 1080p & i loved it , But I purchased the new 4k Asus friday and WOW !! right out the box the picture was gorgeous , first thing i did was go and download some 4k UHD backgrounds and the detail has to be seen to believe , I have been running BF4 on ultra settings with AA off as you don't need it at this res and I am getting a constant 50 -55 fps and jumps down to 35 - 40 when massive explosions go off in your face so a really playable experience, I was using ips before and with this new monitor my kill ratio has doubled :) First of all you will never a see a better looking game , It looks super smooth and it looks gorgeous , I can honestly say I wont ever be using my 1440 res for gaming anymore , The only problem at this moment in time is cost and the fact they have some issues with these monitors , I will be sending mine back monday not because its a bad monitor in anyway but I have a lumance issue with mine on white backgrounds so going to get it replaced , Id say this time next year when single cards will run 4k perfect 4k will really become mainstream, Sony have put a lot of money in to this format & it is beautiful to look at ,

I'd say if you got a good graphics card then go for it.

In september when my 4K Gsync monitor arrives i'll be doing a review/short write up, up until then i'm running 1080p on a 24"

I'll be running it with 2 x GTX780 6GB cards

But if I had the one it would be awfully nice to have one of those ultrawide screens aswell.

Good to see that a single 290x is playable with a 4k monitor, that's a £300 GPU powering 4k, who says you need a big setup. This time next year we'll all be on 4k and this thread will be pointless

I found this review of 780 6gb veriants at 4k (without the g sync monitor)

Although not the set im looking at gives a good indication i think :)

Why not go midway at 1600p?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-023-HO&groupid=17&catid=1120

This monitor was on a daily yesterday for £380 and I imagine it'll go on sale again. Came very very very close to pulling the trigger myself and now that the price is back up I wish I did.

2560x1600 is not mid way. Is just 400,000 more pixels (+11%) compared to 1440p, not 4,608,000 more (more than double) the 4K monitor has.

2560x1600 = 4096000 pixels
2560x1440 = 3686400 pixels
3840x2160 = 8294400 pixels

:D

I believe Muz implies midway between 2560x1440 and 4K.

Since that is the conversation about here 1440p or 4K.

I should have specified I was meaning from 1080p. However you are correct in saying this conversation is about 1440p v 4k and while 1600p is not mid way I believe it is a suitable alternative requiring less GPU grunt.

I am on the lookout for a new monitor myself and 4k has taken my fancy. If you look at it as an investment the 4k monitors should hold up as single GPU solutions become better.

As for what is best for right now I am leaning towards 1440p or 1600p, however if I have learnt anything it is that buying a monitor is no easy task. I can't even decide on a panel type. I've always had TN previously but want an IPS or VA now, but having never seen IPS glow and black crush with my own eyes I really have no idea.

You're in Aberdeen. Pop round and I can show you the Samsung 4K in action; I can also show you IPS.

That is a tempting offer. Perhaps one my wallet wouldn't appreciate but I may take you up on that if I ever get a free moment from the PhD.

1 GPU powering 4K is a pretty horrific experience more often than not actually. Obviously playable is a subjective term, but 2 to three cards minimum for an acceptable experience.
