Need help choosing a new car

TBH mate you're better off looking for a decent car, then deciding how to get there rather than limiting yourself to the immediate area.

Your budget gets you a 2011 Skoda Octavia in Elegance trim - have you considered?

Yeah but it's such a PITA travelling all the way just to look at a car and find out it's scratched to **** or has rust marks etc

Unless the OP drives round town the most where is the problem?

I do, but then I only do ~6000 miles a year, but I would still prefer 30+ mpg.

I'm saving for a house deposit, so I really don't wan't a car that's crazy to look after and is likely to have things failing - this is precisely why I got rid of the VXR.

And whilst I really appreciate the suggestions, I really can't stress enough that I do not want to spend more than £9500 at most. Ideally my budget is £8k.

Why don't you just lease a brand new car if you only do 6k and you don't want anything to fail?

Nothing much has failed on my car yet but I know it will.

If I were you I would just either lease or get a super high mileage car; one where the previous owner should have already replaced everything.

Compared to what though? My car history is of a P Reg Ford Fiest Ghia (first car), Astra SXi Mk4, Astra VXR mk5...

The Leon interior is no worse than a Mk4 or Mk5 Astra

You don't have to view that specific car, go find one nearby and have a sit in one and see what you think.

I own a MK2 leon, and I'm not going to lie to you and tell you its no different from the interior of the Audi. But all I can tell you is that it simply does not bother me, and I still enjoy sitting in it.

Whether that's the same for you or not, you'll need to find out :)

I've never driven one or been in the driver's seat, but a close friend and a colleague both have a Leon/Ibiza and I'm not that overly impressed - they're not bad, they just don't stand out as a car I'd really want.

EDIT - Do you think I should get the mods to rename this thread?

What is it that keeps attracting you to cars with a spec level similar to that found on a 1998 Mondeo LX?

Another totally spartan example.

Linked the wrong one, sorry. Please see the edited post above.

Haha Fox.. what is considered 'essential' spec for you anyway?

For me the only things are a2dp bluetooth and climate control, and you can get the bluetoth with a Parrot kit anyway. Things like auto lights/wipers are nice to have, so is sat nav, leather... but it wouldn't prevent me from buying a car.

OP - Elegance > SE :)

Thanks dude. Cruise Control and Bluetooth Handsfree for me are the only things I really need (I do few annual miles, but sometimes drive from Newcastle to Durham, Alton Towers etc so Cruise Control is very handy). If Bluetooth isn't standard it's no biggy - a Zenec, Parrot, or other HU would easily remedy that.

That's a nice car, and the 1.8tsi is a good engine. Go test it out! Another bonus is 1 year Skoda warranty which should cover most issues you may have!

If he did indeed link the wrong car I can understand what you've put above, but if not - what is wrong with the elegance?

Me personally - I'd like Bluetooth, auto wipers, climate and cruise control. I'll also not own another car without lumber adjustment. Why Honda didn't see fit to give civic drivers what I'd consider a basic adjustment is beyond me.

Will do, I'm going to bus over to the local Skoda Garage afterwork and see what they have in stock, maybe test drive one.

Yeah I had - I'd posted a link to a dark read ES model by mistake. An I call myself an IT professional...

Never had auto wipers or climate control, but climate control is a 'toy' I would like now. Lumber is quite important for me as I do get back ache in some car seats. As said though, SatNav and BT as standard isn't crucial - I use my note 2 for google maps, although that requires data so offline maps could be handy.

I would say that's overpriced. My sister just bought a 2006 2.0 FSI A3 Sportsback with 50K on the clock, 1 owner and full Audi History for £5K. Not my type of car but she needed the extra bit at the back for ferrying my brother, his missus and 2 littleuns about. I gotta say though that the Sportsback boot is HUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE!!! I could even fit in there!

Prob not for you then :)
