hi guys

i'm looking at a car that has 1.4TSI with a 7sp gearbox.

are you happy with your 7sp DSG gearbox? would you go back to manual?

after 18 years of driving manual, i'm getting a bit fed up with changing gears all the time in town...............

I had the 6 speed DSG coupled to a 2.0T and it was a great combination. Only situation it would be a pain was if you floored it from a standstill the box would get confused and take a second or so before you moved at all. Possibly lethal at roundabouts!

Don't think the 7 speed does this though.

I have the 6-speed on a 2.0TFSI, while not identical it is a great drive. I dont have any kick-down issues as described above.

Whilst a manual is great when you're enjoying a good drive, for sitting in commuting traffic I see an auto as a must have these days

Noticed this in mine.

When you roll up to a junction the car stays in 2nd, unless you stop for a little bit of time the car won't drop to 1st, meaning the car wants to pul away in 2nd, if you floor it the car then goes **** and drops to 1st.

Wouldn't go back to a manual box now, DSG is far far better for day to day use.

Can you manually knock it down to first if you pre-empt the problem?

I'm going to try and get myself in an auto for my next car especially as my mileage may be going mahoosive!

Love my dsg

I've got the 7spd with a 1.2 TSI and really like the combo. I've had autos for the past 20 years and they've evolved well. This is the best combo I've owned and driven.

When in D, the car seems reluctant to drop into 1st with the paddle when rolling up to a junction, at a guess the car stops you doing this to prevent a jerky ride.

Couple of ways to sort this, use the car in tip or sport, don't roll up to junctions, if you stop a little quicker the car drops to 1st, or when stopped pull the paddle to drop into 1st, but be warned, this puts the car into manual mode for a short amount of time.

I only have an 'issue' with this at one junction during my trip to/from work, it could be the case that my box needs a software update.

Drove a 1.4 TSI with 7sp DSG for the best part of 3 years and never had any real issues with kickdown, just need to not go to 100% floor, but about 80% get moving and then press harder.

Very responsive little units. This car was replaced with a 1.6 Focus Auto and the gearbox in that is just terrible in comparison.

I have the 7 speed in my Cupra and it's great fun. It's ballistically quick at changing gear and is nice and smooth. Would I go back to a manual given the choice nah. I also have the paddles so when pushing on its great going up and down the gears.

The kick down issue is well documented when coming up to roundabouts. I find you just have to be smooth coming back on to the power and it's ok, if you boot it straight after slowing down it will lurch a little.

Mine however has not been without its issues. The only issue I have had which took seat best part of 6 months to resolve was a funny shudder pulling away in 1st and 2nd. After they did software updates, replaced the mechatronics unit they replaced the clutches which has fixed the issue. Turns our VW uprated the clutches in 2011.

Compared to my misses tip-tronic auto in her Fabia the DSG runs circles round it.

I have 6 speed S-Tronic and love it.

You can avoid the junction/roundabout problem by quickly on/off tapping the accelerator before you move, it kind of tells it you are going to go so it is ready.

I would never normally consider an "auto" but after being driven round the Nurburgring in a Scirocco with a dsg box by a racing drver, it's kind of turned me on to the idea :D

If I commuted by car, and drove in and around London or other towns/cities I'd definitely consider one as I've always enjoyed them, and modern dual clutch boxes are really good. However, because I don't I have to I still like the ability to slip the clutch if I need to and quite enjoy getting a good gear change, feels great. I like that connection with the car.

I concur with what people say about the gearbox not wanting to change to first except when completely stopped. Also when cruising around and you floor it suddenly it will, sometimes, take an age to react - I've sometimes, although very rarely I'll admit, had to wait 1-2 seconds to sort itself out.

Apart from those two niggles it's definitely the way forward. A nice easy automatic when you are just driving around town, then put it in manual mode, or sport if that's your liking, and hoon around like a hooligan :)

After driving my dads auto Merc for a solid month earlier this year, it certainly changed my perception of manuals. After 18 years, I think it would be a good change for you.

I can only speak for a few test drives regarding the DSG but I found it to be an amazing piece of kit.

My commute is ~7 miles and are all back roads, the connection with the manual transmision is something I'd not want to give up, and getting to wring its neck after work is something I'd not want to lose.

Having said that, if I were in traffic for any longer I'd consider an auto of any kind.

this is something I've been wondering about, not that I doubt the capabilities of the 6/7 speed s-tronic, but more how I'd feel with it. autos have always just be a sort of evil.."ooooo don't wana drive those.... it's just lazy" etc etc...I had an auto astra a few years back for a week and it was just a bit odd not changing the gears, fun like a go kart though ha!

but there really is something satisfying about well executed gear change when you're out for a spirited drive :D

however, all of my commute is in the city (not that there's much of it hehe) so it can be a real pain jumping up and down gears with the flow of traffic.

so with people saying they are easy mode for city driving, and seeing how if I open my options up to these DGS' then there's quite a few more used cars to search from (A4/S4), I'm giving it some serious consideration. obviously need to test drive one or two to actually see how it feels.

but it does sound ideal, whack it in D for the commutes and then use the paddles/S for when I'm off down the country roads to see the parents/road trips. left foot might get a bit bored though :p

plus been using the paddles on the pc wheel in assetto corsa so had a bit of practice :p ha!

Depending on year of A4's be careful, most of them are Multitronic and not S-Tronic, Multitronic run on a belt system, it is designed so they can kind of make their own gears up as they go along in regards to going up hills etc, but they are notorius for snapping...£3k gearbox rebuild.

I had a toy with a remapped A3 8L quattro that had the same power as a standard 225 S3 and we were neck and neck, totally down to the DSG on mine because every time he changed gear he would edge back, every time I changed gear there was no car length difference. I can't wait to fit a 200 cell cat and get a remap on mine, I only have 160hp, with those mods I should be knocking on 240hp and matching torque :)

Is every thread an opportunity to brag about your incredible, amazing Audi that we are all so jealous of?

Although to be fair the part about the Multi vs S-tronic was helpful at least for Sasso :)

Surely this is just while the engine builds up revs before dumping the clutch to prevent a stall? There is a slight delay with my 6 speed DSG in the R32 when planting your foot on the line but it just builds revs in that fraction of a second before you start moving.

I love manual's but I do also love my DSG and would almost certainly go for another one
