I am having to revamp my computer desk/room - this means that printer can't sit anywhere near PC - So my printer is Canon MP520 which I connect by USB - Now can I convert this to WiFi using Printer USB wifi server or whatever and will it connect through my Home Hub 4 or do I need a WiFi card for the PC.

I guess it can be done so any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Dave

You'd only need a wireless connection between the printer and your router. How the PC connects to the router is irrelevant.

MFPs on print servers can be more trouble than they're worth, even assuming you can get them working I the first place. Make sure you check the printer server manufacturer's compatibility lists.

Personally I'd either replace the printer with one that supports wireless, of find a way of extending the USB connection.

Unfortunately there is no way to get USB to printer - Oh well what's another 100 quid for progress.

I'm in a similar boat, but my printer is just a straight printer (no multi-function), and it has Ethernet. I think a multi-function printer with no Ethernet is pretty much the worst possible in terms of getting it on wifi. =(

Get a router with a USB sharing port (for printer/storage drive/etc) port, and place the printer near the router?

Or just buy a wifi capable printer you can get them for way less than £100.

e: I can see them online for £50

Converting a straight forward printer that already has Ethernet to wireless should be easy.

You want something like
TP-Link TL-WPS510U Print Server Hi-Speed USB
Interesting device. From the reviews, it seems only a single person can use it at a time (you have to run an app before you can use it?). Have you got one of these? How does it work?

@rotor

If your printer has an Ethernet port then it'll already have a internal print server.

A router such as the TP-Link TL-WR702N that supports 'client mode' should allow you to add wireless capabilities. You'd connect the router to a PC to configure it to be able to connect to your wireless and then plug it to the printer. The printer wouldn't be aware that it was using a wireless connection and it'd work as if it was plugged directly into the wired network.

Sky offer similar devices to allow non-wireless Sky+ boxes to use wireless.
