I sold me 911 a few weeks ago and today sold my golf. I did plan to buy a 991 but they are too expensive and I liked the R8 V10 but just did not love it enough to spend £70k on it.

So the plan is to buy something cheaper but still fun and comfortable to keep me going until I can find a 911 that I like which will probably be 6 to 12 months.

So I would like to spend £15k to £25k, I need minimal depriciation if possible. The 2 ides I came up with was a TTs or a Z4 35i. The TT should remap to around 310 bhp and the Z4 to 370 ish.

TT's i found

And the Z4 I found

Anyone have any thoughts? I have never driven the Z4 35i and the dealer does not have any in stock.

My first thought was "is a Cayman or Boxster a possible contender?"

I can't get on with the new Z4 looks wise and think the Audi is about to be replaced? Though it's a nicer looking car imo

Both the Audi and Z4 is about to be replaced. I will take a look at the cayman and boxter but I dont think I can get a Gen 2 for that sort of money.

Also is it worth looking at the BCA auctions?

My problem with the Z4 is that a brand new 35si can be had for £32k so I find it difficult to pay £20k for a used one with 50 000 miles on it.

You could look at auction, but are you realistically going to get something coming off a 2 or 3 year lease for the kind of cash you want to spend? Otherwise you don't want to touch anything else in this kind of bracket from Auction. You also need to take into account the fees as for a private buyer they're hefty on a car of that value at most of the big sites these days.

If you know someone who is trade, they'll pay lower fees. Even better someone who is registered on the BCA system, you can track what recent examples have went for

A weird problem, would it stop you buying a Fiesta for £50, after all, a new one is £12k

It's £32k without options btw, once you add Nav etc as per that used one its rather more expensive.

£20k I can live with, a used 35si is £25 to £28k which just feels too expensive considering the discounts there are to be had on a new one.

But your right I should not think of it like that.

The M3 CSL is really not for me.

Almost £30k with 75k on the clock and 11 years old. The CSL is good but not sure its that good. How much would that be worth once it has almost 100,000 on the clock.

Arguably a whole lot more than most other things at that mileage - as an example, search for e28 M5's (a car of IMO similar status M Car wise) 150 - 160k + mile examples fetch obscene money, I think you'll find the CSL in good condition will be no different.

The M3 CSL is really not for me.

Fair enough but have you tried one?

Neither to be honest. A Boxster is the obvious choice here.

The new Z4 looks great from the front, but the other angles don't work as well as the old one, plus it's really quite heavy and not a great drive by most accounts.

Of course it depends what you're after, it's a decent convertible GT.

I wouldn't bother with the Audi, 8 year old design now and I'm not sure I could justify £20k on one.

Acme- Thanks I will do some reading on them

No I have not but the interior is too dated for me and I am not really looking for something track focused more comfortable but still fast.

I know the lotus does not fit that but they look really different and could be quite nice to try out.

Spend £14k on a really nice 3.4L Boxster (987), it's a different car to the 911 so won't feel too inferior. It won't lose much money, won't cost you too much (compared with the 911) and will be the best of the bunch.

I recently sold mine for £13.5k with a FPSH and it was completely mint (and had all the options I could have wanted, some may have missed NAV but I doubt it in a small sports car).

Z4M Coupe is about £16k and near the bottom of its depreciation curve I reckon, was doing some research myself a month ago
