Nuisance calls - how to stop ?

What do you do about the unknown callers that have a pre-recorded message? The other numbers I add to my auto-reject list.

Here is a list of the last 10 numbers that called.

0843 6546680
0845 6021111
0843 6546731
0843 6546139
0843 6546997
0843 6546730
0843 7243086
0843 7243129
0843 7243072
0843 7241052
0843 7242041

Did a quick search on a few of those numbers, and most seem to be related to companies doing the PPI claim offer.

There was a story in the news a while back about some bloke who set up a premium rate number just for these companies to call him so at least he could make some money on wasting his time.

If they've agreed to receive info about services or products from a third party, whether they meant to or not, then registering with the TPS won't save them.

Comparison websites will **** you up big time in this regard, and your mobile provider as well.

TPS is only valid for business operating inside the UK. A lot of these nuisance call centres and auto diallers operate outside of the UK, so are not affected by TPS restrictions.

Can you do that? If so I'm doing that at my parents place. Constant PPI BS calls.

Ive been plagued by this on and off for years.

TPS is a one off registration but only covers companies based in the UK.

Changing you number is not guaranteed to fix it, as you will more than likely receive a re-cycled number and just get the nuisance calls intended for that number instead.

If your being called by an Indian call center about "surveys" or "PPI" and its being re-routed though a UK number then there is nothing TPS can do.

BT (or your provider) do not give a ****. They will sell you some kit that can improve the situation as it sits between the socket and your phone, uses a list of auto updating numbers and allows you to add new numbers to the block list. The call centers are aware of this though so every few months they just change the numbers they call from and the cycle starts again.

The above ^^ and all other similar devices will only work if you have full caller line ID enabled. This is not enabled by default on BT and will cost you a few quid per month to enabled it.

Getting ratty, aggressive or just hanging up had limited success, but eventually the calls would start again.
Asking to have your number removed should work if its a UK company but has no effect on foreign calls. Legaly in the UK if you ask to be removed they have to, or you report them to the TPS.

If your receiving the same call at the same time, day after day then ignoring the call is a good suggestion. The software they use to make the calls will detect this. After a few days it assumes your no longer in at that time and your number will stop being called.

I have used the underwear discussion on a few occasions, but again it has limited success. Most of the time if you ask someone what color there underwear is (regardless of sex) and if they are shaved. They will hang up and not call again tomorrow.

I removed my land line phone and binned it. I just use my mobile for everything now. No nuisance calls any more. If it wasn't for my internet, I'd rip out my landline altogether.

Easiest fix for this is to ditch your home phone, we kept on getting annoying calls from India so just chucked the phone in the bin. 6 years on we don't miss it one bit, there's just no real need for them now that everyone has a mobile phone and unlimited minutes.

One way to deal with these calls is to have a whistle by the phone and a few quick shrill blasts into the handset does wonders apparently ;)

Personally , I have switched the ringer off and only use it for outgoing calls or I switch the ringer back on if i'm expecting a call at a certain time. There's something quite peaceful never having to hear the phone ring

The CPR 1200 Call blocker seams to be popular, I have no idea how good it is though.

I've had a bout of the windows virus idiots phoning again over the last 2 months.

What are people's attitude to withheld numbers these days? My handset has been on TPS for years. Although I still get PPI texts frequently due to them being from overseas, most cold callers have been blocked. Today however, I had 2 missed calls from a withheld number and they didn't leave a message. So it can't have been that important :-)

Most providers include it as standard.

The ultimate solution to the problem really is to block all numbers not on your contact list, only allowing messages. This stops you ever getting a phone call from someone you may not want and any important caller will leave a message.

It only takes a few minutes to set up on your phone, costs little to nothing and is 100% effective. Unlike the expensive and ugly truecall unit that only works with landlines, annoys legitimate callers and still allows unwanted callers to get through by pressing a button.

Same here, I solved the problem of nuisance and marketing calls by unplugging the phone and throwing it in the bin.

Anybody who needs us can call us on the mobiles, and any spam calls we get are added to the block list.

I did have a PPI company keep ringing me with an automated call that wouldn't stop even after I pressed 5 or what ever to say I wasn't interested. So I pressed 3 for a call back from a person to discuss PPI and ****ed into them about pestering me.
