Guardians of the Galaxy

It was good and entertaining but not exactly amazing as the hype would suggest. The recent marvel films have been dire anyhow (IM3 anyone!!?) so at least this is an improvement on that.

From the trailers I thought this looked daft and discounted it immediately, but I may have to rethink that since I've seen nothing but glowing reviews (almost!).

I really like GotG. The characters were good, there were some really funny lines and the action was good - well deserving of it's success. Looked great at the IMAX as well :)

Plot holes galore and the movie doesn't stick to the original comic book depiction of the characters. That is to say Drax wasn't really Destroyer enough for me. Well done on the Racoon. His vocabulary exceeds that of his teammates.

Edit: Forget that. They used the 2006 incarnation of Drax which saw him severely dumbed down.

I've never read the comics, so don't really know how he was in the comics - but the friend I went to see it with did make the same complaint

It did cross my mind though that with Marvel changing the origins of the characters, there is still room for him to become the destroyer that he was in the comics - is it possible that there could be come residual effect on him from the Infinity stone that boosts his strength in the next movie to make him capable of taking on Thanos?

Just got back from watching this and I loved it.

Perfect balance between action and comedy. Question, I'll put it in spoiler tags though it only touches on the film;

is the infinity stone in this one of those that the likes of Baron Zemo and others acquire at one point or are they something else?

yep ironman is probably the only other really decent marvel character in all these marvel films of recent

Loki?

Saw this today and really enjoyed it. Maybe a little disjointed at times, but what you gonna do?

I would have preferred more development of the Nova Prime characters, so we had more of an emotional investment in them when it came to what happened later. The battle was impressive, but if it felt like something was in the balance it could have been epic.

Yes it is

Seen this on Tuesday night and enjoyed it a lot. It was a nice refreshing change from some of the other comic book films. I loved the tone of the movie and the time just flew by. Will deff buy it on Bluray when it comes out.

Just felt like pure entertainment from start to finish - without being childish and silly at any point

So far in all movies we have not seen anybody capable of stopping Thanos so I am wondering how and when they, the directors, will up the anti, so to speak? The abilities of Thanos include his own mutant gene that augments his abilities ; control over the power cosmic, invulnerability and super strength on a par with or better than the hulk, super intelligence etc. He is unable to die and his abilities are further augmented by Death. Clearly he must only be after the infinity gems to destroy creation and it must only be a matter of time before the other major powers like the Living Tribunal, Galactus and Infinity/Eternity get involved one would hope? In any event it represents a great showcase for Marvell to bring their characters to the public.

Watched this the other week and it was awesome.

Groot and Rocket were awesome and I think the cast in general was great.

Can't wait for the second!

Well, Marvel has shown that they're willing to re-write the back-story and capabilities of certain characters to fit better with the movies. I imagine Thanos' powers will be toned down a bit in comparison to the comics. Also...

Adam Warlock's cocoon was shown intact in the Collector's vault in the after-credits scene of Thor 2, but was empty in the after-credits scene of Guardians. It's a fair bet that he will appear in the sequel to Guardians - perhaps as Star Lord's father(?).

Either way, it's going to take a full-scale marshalling of the Avengers, the Guardians, and anyone else in order to take him down. Which is the way it should be after six years of build-up!

I like that idea.

Also, Nova. I reckon the remaining new 'Phase 3' franchise will be a Nova/Nova Corps film. It would certainly make a lot more sense than Captain Marvel* or Black Panther* and could serve as a good lead-in for The Avengers 3. They need some way to link the events in space to events on Earth, and it seems Thor 3 and Guardians 2 are both too early in the schedule to fill this role. A Nova movie would also allow them to flesh out the wider universe a bit, provide a different perspective and maybe join some dots (like how does the Galaxy introduced in Guardians fit in with Asgard, Earth and other events and places we have already seen).

*Neither character would bring anything new to the Thanos story arc - their roles within The Avengers are already played by serving members, and neither of them have back stories that bring any kind of new perspective to the story of Thanos.

I did notice Adam's cocoon was missing. I'm wondering whether the soul gem went with it as there would be no place safer for it than with it's original keeper? Keeping in line with the Collector's motivation for saving things, it would make sense for him to align himself to Adam as well. That is to say he saw the coming of Thanos and commenced his quest to collect things to save them from destruction. Just read that Warlock's cocoon was still there but opened.

Recent/previous story line arcs have seen Thanos wallop the Hulk and kill the Silver Surfer, so happy days are ahead :D

Is The Avengers 3 definitely 'The Avengers 3'? It' s just something I'm pondering. Unless they nerf Thanos massively, The Avengers are going to get their arsed kicked, some of them are going to die, and then more powerful beings from the wider MCU (Steve Strange, maybe Odin, maybe unannounced characters like Adam Warlock, Nova and The Sentry) are going to come and work together to defeat Thanos. If this is the case, is it really an Avengers film? Why not give it its own title?

It just seems a bit lame to make an 'Avengers' film where the 'Avengers' do nothing but get beat up and die. The alternative (Thanos being nerfed) is an even more sorry prospect.
