How do we get SUPER cheap stuff??

Also not sure if it has been mentioned but often cheap chinese items have not been through the extensive testing procedures it takes to achieve CE/ROHS mark etc. (although often it will be on the box how they get away with it I dont know!) meaning that a product can be designed, manufactured and put to market both very cheaply and very quickly, making the process much quicker.

Welcome to China!

I can't imagine they'll be making much profit off a £1 cable (normally that includes delivery costs from ebay too), that already goes to show what cheap materials they're using and how much labour they are paying. The only process involved is ripping a design and mass producing. 10p profit on 10k cables is 1k. And as they're so cheap, people don't mind buying several or constantly replacing when they break.

They don't put the C E mark on their boxes, they put the CE mark on ;)

CE standing for China Export...

Assuming you got your charger in a pound shop, they were bought (usually from China) heavily discounted from their original price. They were surplus stock from a batch that used to cost £10 for example and someone was desperate to get rid of them as they are now either not selling/outdated/replaced etc etc.

Pound shops will get these items for in large quantities with a very thin profit margin (say 80-90p) but will sometimes pay over the £1 they would sell it for, if they consider the item would likely attract new customers who would most likely buy a few other things while getting this "bargain charger".

Something like this, happens surprisingly where a company fails, someone buys up their left over stock for next to nothing and sells it on at a price that will get rid of it and they still make a profit.

So... where'd you find a £1 charger that works? :D

GF bought a shedload from china and none of them worked to charge let alone move stuff across from PC :p

I wouldn't bother trusting the electrical safety of the item (and might break your phone)

For a good charger I'd go with anker, long warranty and better charger than my Sony one provided (and it charges up to 5 devices at 1.8amp). Cost me 20quid tho.

As for price, economies of scale (massive scale though I agree!), also avoiding safety testing saves money

This isn't the 80s, if they failed the standards testing they wouldn't even be sold in the poundshop.
Stop watching monday morning television !

Oh I'm sorry.

I didn't realise if it was on a consumer program and showed events within the past 18 months, that it was all smoke and mirrors.

I'll bypass the fact I read most of these stories on the news and just say, damn you Dominic Littlewood you deviant *******.

I'll just leave this here from a fortnight ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-28419412

Coincidentally I was listening to something on the radio the other day and an insurance analyst or the like from a major household insurer said one of their most common causes for claims was fires started by chargers for phones/tablets/laptops etc being left plugged in over night!

I think I might start plugging mine out!

a lot of cheap electronics from china/taiwan bought via chinese sellers are under spec and dangerous.

that's why most the cheap chargers get so hot

You could fry an egg on my Dell laptop charger after about 20 minutes if use. I wonder would they have cut corners and used cheaper parts there too?

Super cheap stuff comes more or less from economies of scale. (all relatively speaking) Not meaning paying peanuts for something. TV that normally retails for £800 and Costco knocks it out for £400 would be 'super cheap' relatively speaking. But not 'super cheap' as some may deem it.

Super cheap stuff where you talk pennies comes from that and cheap labour.

edit. Also what has been touched on here, with regards to somethings being so cheap it's beyond comprehension, might be down to the fact they are making a loss on said product, but they sell other products at such a mark up that it counters the loss on others.

There were a few cases where those 3rd party adaptors bursts into flames, my cousin had one and happened to him, he posted a photo on FB. It was so common that Apple took an interesting step for a limiting time that if you take it to their store, they would swap you for a real one.
