I can't work in an office for the next 50 years...

Old thread I know but some news from me ... Might inspire you! :)

Its never too late. I am 40 and have jacked in my job a few weeks ago. Going to China for a year or two in September to study mandarin and travel around. Just signed contract for apartment in China today and registered for private language school (required for long term visa) All in now

Life is too short to be working in an office for the rest of my life and then eventually start looking for furniture with a lid on it

If you dont mind me asking how much did it cost to sign up for the language school?

its various prices, I am going to Beijing and its £3k for 2 terms in a reputable school (20 weeks per term). There are cheaper and more expensive. You can get cheaper by joining a university. Thats about £1.5k I think. Or if you go outside Beijing it will be cheaper.

Accommodation is the main expense of course. Much cheaper Outside Shanghai / Beijing

I just want to get a years visa. Not entirely interested in the school but will see how it goes. Might do a term in Sichuan, the province near Tibet

can you work on that visa? ie do some english teaching for a few hours a week? Thanks though ive thought about doing something similar

not on my one. You need a Z visa for that. But if that's what you wanted to do, then the school sort out the visa. I don't think its that hare to get as they want their kids learning English. Also I heard lots parents want their kids ti get private lessons on the side (kept quiet) and I believe rich parents will pay a lot for a native speaker.
