Hey folks,

Quick question before I go ahead and make a purchase. I originally had a Powercolor R9 280 (non X) but had it RMAd twice and got a refund. I've been sitting on my laurels waiting to pull the trigger on a new card and see the MSI GTX 770 for £210 vs. the Powercolor or XFX R9 280's £150.

The MSI has an additional year warranty. Wondering what your opinions are of MSI and the 770 vs the 280. Is the additional power worth the extra ~£50? Should I be concerned about 1GB less vram? This is my first build so still learning.

I've an i5 4690k and don't have much of an interest in OCing for the time being. Current components exceed my needs but I like knowing there is potential for the future :).

Thanks for any replies.

Cheers for the replies. There is the XFX 280X for £210 also with one year less warranty than the MSI 770. Wouldn't consider the Powercolor unfortunately.

I realise benchmarks aren't the be all and end all but the 770 edges the 280X in that area. They are level pegging though apart from VRAM amount - can I ask where this would matter? I'm on a single 1080p monitor.

How do MSI and XFX compare as manufacturers? That seems the most significant difference between the 770 and 280X I am considering.

I think you have got that round the wrong way.:D

The 280X (HD7970) is the top dog on benches.:)

@ 1080P the 770 and 280X are so close you can find one or the other marginally ahead depending on where you go to look at performance, basically they are the same in terms of performance.

As for Bang for £ the 280X is the clear winner.

XFX are fine as long as you buy here at OcUK as they cover the warranty.

PS: there is nothing wrong with Powercolor, at least not these days, the one i have now is the second one in the last two years, the first was a 7870XT which replaced a Gigabyte 7870 WF3, let me tell you the Powercolor was the better GPU, the 290 i have now is nothing short of brilliant. :)

Cheers for all the replies. Leaning towards the XFX 280X at £210. Very happy with OCUK and their warranty process but don't want another RMA, would feel awful. Shame there isn't the equivalent of driver power surveys for GPUs, like the incidence rates of failure/RMAs.

Wouldn't mind Powercolor, Humbug, but unfortunately RMAd two R9 280s by them for being abnormally noisy - fan issues according to OC. That's why I'm looking for a new card.

Ok no bother. :) i think the XFX DD cooler is pretty quiet.
