Vanishing 780 6Gb cards?!

Knowing nVidia they probably realised that the 6GB 780 meant that people wouldn't have to upgrade to avoid VRAM problems. They always seem to give just enough VRAM for the current generation and nothing more.

Or they didn't anticipate the demand for these cards correctly and cannot keep up with demand so OCUK have pulled the listings to avoid people getting frustrated at ETAs being missed.

Any money Nvidia launch their new 870 6GB cards which are probably gonna be re-badged 780's but more expensive.

Tin foil hat on :p

Spoke to Overclockers regarding this as I want 2 x 780 6 GBs in my rig.

They state their purchasing department have marked them as end of life.

Particularly the MSI model. I believe I managed to get the last two Inno cards.

As for the reasons why, who knows.

AIBs would have pre-empt that there would be a limited window to sell these so that not to make too many.

Not surprising the mix of value (for NVIDIA) and reasonably future proof cards go eol first as a couple of those would definitely see you through this whole GTX 880 business.

I can't imagine the Asus 780 Strix disappearing any time soon, Having only recently appeared it's bound to be around for a while if anyone wants one, I thought it was odd Overclockers never got them in stock but now I know why.

Of course they do its how a lot of companies do it. If they give you loads of VRAM now and the ability to sli they then lose any more money from you for a couple of years. Slow and steady gains keep the customer coming back......give them too much and there goes next years profits.

Not saying its right, just saying :)

I feel the same. 4K is becoming very popular from looking around various forums and very affordable (I never imagined 4K screens to be under £500 already), so I imagine lots of people have done their research and seen that 6GB is great for 4K and snapped up a couple of the 780 6GB cards.

My thoughts anyway.

4k is not very popular outside "various [tech enthusiast] forums" :p

Unless you mean a few hundred people have them, heck maybe even a few thousand.

Let's not forgot the 4k revolution in TV has been supposed to be happening for ... well, years. "Next year 4k TVs will really start to take over." Well, no, no they didn't.

People on sites like these always seem to get disconnected from reality due to the average person here having vastly more powerful kit than in the real world. Heck, you guys talk about your x-fire 290s and SLI 780s like it was a mid-range setup :p

I'm another niche market then - GPU rendering. But its kicking off this year with a few different softwares becoming production ready finally. When companies moving into GPU rendering buy 20 odd cards at a time it might have an effect on stock, particularly as memory size is key.

I think anyone that has 6gb cards left over will be at quite a big loss
