Hey guys, my friend is selling his R9 290 core XFX 4GB. Now I have never had an AMD card but thought I would ask if it's worth me getting it. I have a 670 4gb now and it runs games on full at 144hertz fine. I use a single monitor as in sig. He is letting me have first offer and said I can have this for £180, but I know little about AMD cards. Is this worth it? and is there any point in changing?

Thanks

£180 is a good price and you'll be looking at a noticeable improvement over your 670 in fps terms. So yes, that's a "do it" from me.

Yep, id go for it too. Will indeed be a nice upgrade from a 670. Later on if you feel you need a bit more oomph you could drop in another cheap 290 for some xfire action.

Well you wont be getting the most out your 144hz with a single GPU let alone a 670.. Unless you run low settings on most games?
a single 290 will push frame rate much better but still wont get close to your 144hz

I run max settings on every game I play shankly. But im sure I will notice a difference when i get this. On BF4 I use ultra settings with 4xmsaa but post off. Then res scale to 150 and it runs great on the 670.

Iirc i was getting average fps in the 90's in bf4 with max settings on sli 670, (1920x1200 res) The 290 is similair to the 780 which i have now, where im seeing 80fps average on the same settings. Also with the 290 youll be able to use mantle which will help with a few games, (bf4 being one).

sound good to me, although if he used it to mine i would think about it. dont want a knackered out card giving up after a couple of months.
