AMD 6950 100c temps

This is my sons computer, getting on a bit now but its still up the the task and runs all games. Cards an Asus reference design, hitting around 100c under load, max temp ive seen it hit is 103c. The card would always run around 70-80c gaming, up until recently and i noticed it was a lot louder than normal, (gpu fan working hard) checked the temps with afterburner and they're the readings i got.

Ive had the cooler off and gave it a good clean and new thermal paste which has not made the slightest bit of difference. Side panel of the case off and 15 inch fan blowing into it has brought temps down a bit to mid 90s, but still not good.

About a month ago his psu went pop tripping the main electrics in the process, lian li maxima force 650w around a year old, beware of that psu. Brought him a new psu (xfx 650w xxx) as its the same psu ive used for around 3+ years going strong and thinking about it it seems this has been happening since then his psu went bang.

So im wondering is it possible that the cards been damaged in some way caused be the psu going bang?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd say 90-103c is too hot for a single card

Check airflow through case etc, and I'd double check the past and cooler is sat properly and the fins aren't blocked with dust or anything.

Or there's always upgrade like faceman123 suggested =D

I only normally upgrade when a game or something comes out that computer cant play it properly then its time to upgrade.Think the cards around 3 years old now so its served well, still runs fine, no artifacting or glitching, just the heat issue. But yeah you might be right, might be time for an upgrade, see if it last until xmas. :D

Ive completely cleaned the case out after i wrote this, side panel and front panel dust filters were very clogged to say the least. And re-done the gpu again with different paste and just to make sure its all seated properly, all fins looked fine. Not tested it yet.

Not checked fan rpm, but it sounds like its spinning fine, ive adjusted it to manual through afterburner to 100% and the thing sounds like its going to take off.

I loaned a friend a gtx 260 black edition and after he had returned it from a year of use it would idle at 50-60 degrees and run so hot it would fail within 5 minutes. No matter of cleaning or new paste could save that puppy which made me conclude that either the chip itself was damaged somehow or the cooling solution and i dont mean the fans here but the actually heatsink. I think its the same issue in this case. I would say that its not really worth trying to fix considering the age of that card so find some cheap but good enough replacement and be done with it.

it could be the heatsink all dusted up. have you completely taken it to part to see the heastsink?

something like this

Yeah split it in half like that, unscrewed the fan also and cleaned all the blades with cotton buds. Just gave it a quick test and max temp was 80c, seems better anyway, maybe the different paste i used helped or it was not seated properly.

Will probably upgrade for him anyway. Looking to spend around £100-£150 and wouldnt have a problem buying a 2nd hand card which say has only had a couple of months use or something.

Temps seem a little better, make sure you clean the thermalpaste off really good with thermal paste cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, and make sure you use good paste on it, could have just been dust if your temperatures have dropped 20c by cleaning it, and make sure the heatsink is properly making contact with the core :)

I happen to know you can get a non-reference 280X for £130, because that's what I am reluctantly selling mine for. AMD cards are going for peanuts now so you can clean up for very little. Even 290s are going cheap.

The card did indeed give up the ghost about a month ago, first it just started random black screen like loss of signal to the monitor, then just black screen on start up, tested it in my PC and had the same effect. I stuck the spare 5450 i had lying around just to get my son by until something came up, my brother just upgraded to 2x970gtx so i got hold of his old 2x670gtx for peanuts.

So all is well, just stuck the one 670 in my sons computer and will probably sell the other one or just keep it tucked away as a back up card.
