Babylon 5 to be rebooted as a cinematic film!

Would be nicer if for once someone could think up some new, unique space sci-fi rather than constantly remaking stuff.

I will wait and see on this - might be ok, might be poor.

Hmm not sure how I feel about this...Would probably prefer something just set in the B5 universe, maybe a prequel. Or better yet, the technomage book trilogy story :D

They never get the budgets needed for epic scifi these days.

If I was rich enough I'd personally fund one for stupid money

Just no :(
Babylon 5 was done right the first time and for the sake of better computer graphics there is no reason except money to reboot the franchise. The original cast took five years to develop their characters, most of them ending up very different to how they started (physically in Delenn's case) and it was these complex and believable characters that made B5 great.

Sure, they've done a reboot of Star Trek and Batman but those had huge budgets, B5 won't.

If they do it right the film could lead to a new series (think big budget pilot), which could let them cover additional storylines.

As Arknor says sci-fi tends to require huge budges (I think they tie with costume period drama), which given how risky it is means there is a strong disincentive for doing something completely new.
Hence part of the reason for the reboots, even Marvel's films started off with the safest bets (and took several attempts at that) by using their best known characters then adding in more who were not as well known.

Personally I'll remain optimistic about it, especially if JMS is the one doing the script etc.

In the mean time I'll have the Redshirts and Old Man's War/Ghost Brigade TV series to look forward too with some degree of hope.

We dont have the Tv actors, G'Kar and Londo where made by the people playing them, and story between them was believable with everything happened between them.

JMS seems pretty smart, hes got all the right to B5 so he can technically do what he wants, so happier that its him in charge.

But which part of the story would they do? There is no way you could reboot the entire story arc as a single film and it still have impact.
I can only think the Earth / Mimbari wars, leading to the founding of the Babylon stations? The Shadow war would need far to much background, and in a film wouldn't seem an ongoing war, just a few battles. Remaking The Gathering would be a bit pointless without knowing the story can continue.
I've got a lot of faith in JMS, and hope that something does happen, but it's just such a huge story to tell.

Good lord no. JMS at the helm or not. There are enough side stories to be told in that universe without resorting to this.

Rather see a spin off or Trek-esque remastering improving the CGI of the original than this

Hmm not sure on this...b5 doesn't need redoing, besides I'm not sure current actors could do it justice, and some of the original cast are dead (g'kar and Dr franklin off top of my head)
The CG would need to be done from scratch either way, lost tales had to use 'fan models' as all the original work was lost (hence no remastered version).

They've tried crusade and lost tales, neither really took off.

Only thing I can think they'd do is first shadow war, the earth minbari war, the psy war (seems to fit with Sheridan as earth president) or the centauri wars, or as a long shot the something to do with the rangers. If it doesn't focus on b5 it does raise questions though.

Will always miss G'Kar, I do hope whoever gets that part does it justice. The most changed and moved character across a series, superby portrayed by Andreas.

He had some of the best lines/ speeches, but Andreas could deliver them so well.

I would still look forward to this, but only cause im a fan of the B5 universe, so would understand it, im not sure who it would work to help to adopt new fans.

really dont know what to think about this. would love for more bab5 stuff to be made but rehashing the original show is a bit of a let down. and then we have the whole budget, if they go cheap it will show and be a complete meltdown.

This thread prompted me to check out Michael O'Hares wiki page again as Jeffrey Sinclair was one of my favourite characters in the show. Wow, had no idea he suffered from serious mental illness during the show and that was the real reason he left after the first season. Secret he and JMS kept to his grave apparently. So sad.

I agree, I really hope this pans out:cool:

I think originally the The Psi War was to form the basis of a movie back in the 90's which I think would have been epic. So much time has passed though so I can understand the need to reboot as long as:

A: JMS is at the helm:cool:
B: Christopher Franke is involved in the soundtrack:cool: (Crusade really needed his touch)
C: the old crew make some cameos:cool::cool:

As a reminder of what was:

Epic Battles:cool:

Love this scene:cool:

This scene has everything that made B5 great:cool:

you may have guessed I'm a huge fan:o:D

Think this is one of my favourite parts, think it was the end to teh season as well.

Also, Sleeping In Light is still the best finale I know of.

Franks soundtrack was amazing,
Season 3 intro was my fav.

Not sure at all.

Reboot means it doesn't have to have any of the 'visual style' that made it one of, if not THE best sci fi series I've ever seen. One of the richest and best filled universes in filmed sci-fi with some of the best evolving characters and relationships of any series, sci-fi or not.

I really hope it gets made but it wont be the real B5 to me.

B5 deserved more notoriety than it got as said in the article it was running alongside DS9 which was bigger/better budget and had an already huge fan base to follow it.

Ive not seen DS9 for yonks - kinda feel liek its time to re watch the best episodes.
