Goin be used for work run and camping, probably long run out on a Sunday kinda thing.

I would like to try some off road but nothing major to begin with.

So I guess something dual purpose to begin.

Im not very knowledgeable about cars and stuff but I want something fun.

I had an LPG'd P38 Range Rover for around that budget. Great motor, and I miss it terribly. Not the most reliable motors mind you, but bags of character. Would have another.

Where are you based?

Having just entered into the same foray my hindsight thoughts would be

A small light swb is great for 4wd days, a large lwb heavy 4wd is a bit limiting. Have you got somewhere to 4wd? do you mean green laning, fields or muddy bomb holes and neck deep water?

A good 4wd with bad tyres is a rubbish 4wd, a Suzuki Jimny with BFG Mud Terrains will out perform most, a Range Rover with road tyres will spin on wet grass.

I have a 3ltr d Mk6 Hilux Dbl Cab with BFG All Terrains and am able to tackle quite a bit but I am limited because I have side steps and an underun bar.

1996 pre-facelift Jeep XJ, no questions. Spend a grand or two on a really, really good one, enjoy.

as much as im a landie guy, id agree with this.

Just be aware that whatever you buy will be a money pit :p

Buying a 4x4 is fairly cheap. converting it into an off roader is pretty expensive. Also bear in mind that a vehicle which is great on a pay and play day will likely be pretty crappy on the road. Its all a compromise.

Damn I'm looking at Jeep's now for no reason :p

Love them.

Was the pre-facelift much better or soemthing? £2k gets you a 2001 from what I can see? 4.7l V8, nice.

Those are Grands, which I wouldn't really recommend. You want a square-bodied XJ, a la:

One of the best cars I've ever owned. Only buy the four litre though, the diesel's not good and the 2.5s are pointless.

Just from my personal experience:

Nissan Xtrail - was alright - but it broke in the end and needed a replacement engine lol. Overall though it was capable.

Jeep Grand Cherokee - well within your budget. Loads to choose from. Definitely great, but in my opinion the on road ability lacked compared to say a range.

BMW X3 is what I replaced the jeep with but it isn't great offroad. however for an on road SUV type of 4x4 it's very good. I've taken it through deep snow several times and had no issues. But I'd not want to take it 'actually off road'

I miss my 4.0 XJ. It was a cracking car for the money. Didn't miss a beat on me in two years and 25k miles. Fuel consumption was the only pain but it could do close to 30mpg if driven like a saint on the motorway. Very capable off road.

This + 10,000! :D

Superb vehicles!

(As stated! Only consider the 4 litre petrol! The diesels are not just bad they are awful!#)

BUT!

Be aware that they DO rust! (And badly!) so if you do go to check one out, Make sure you have a really good look underneath before buying!

(# The diesels were so bad I would be amazed if there are actually any left!)

I have no need for a 4x4, but I now really want a Jeep. Prob never find one as clean as lashouts though knowing my luck

They do burnouts really easily too (tarmac underneath, running in 2WD mode) :D

Just such great workhorses. Once pushed a seized Omega to the top of a twin deck transporter like it wasn't even there. Fun pulling people out of the ditches in winter too.

Finding a good one's the trick; I paid £850-odd for the blue one, my second, and it was immaculate underneath. Most are worn, tired, sloppy and soft. A good one should feel taught, responsive and quite fast off the line. Accept nothing less.

bit of a revival. I've been looking at getting one for years, throw dogs in the back, go greenlaning, wildlife photography etc.

Seems like prices are on the up though, remember looking at a mint one 2 years ago for £800.

Would something like this be the best best:

Aware its LPG as well, which to me is a plus depending on where it was installed etc.
