Robin Williams found dead at home

Such an unexpected thing to wake up to this morning. I liked him very much and enjoyed his films a lot. A great man, clever, kind, funny and warm. RIP Robin :(

A huge loss to his craft :(

Suicide is a selfish act

expecting someone to suffer so you don't have to feel grief is a selfish act.

Suicide is always selfish, people filled with grief left behind.

is the old cancer patient in agony who refuses their meds because they just want the pain to stop selfish?

why should people be forced to live just so YOU don't have to feel bad for a while?

Wow really amazed to see some of comments regarding selfishness, reminds me of this meme which sadly sums up the mindset of those who don't understand depression:

We don't intend to misunderstand depression; if you haven't had it or don't have it, like anything, it's incredibly difficult to understand. We do what we think is appropriate, generally out of love.

Its an emotive subject, I can't help but agree with you Tefal.

Unfortunately most of the people who comment on selfishness etc clearly don't know anyone who truly suffers, or have lost someone, or have experienced themselves.

You could actually say that they are selfish for not understanding that it is a serious thing

I genuinely don't know if I'm depressed, I'm not "glum" and I'm actually pretty optimistic...but I wouldn't say I'm happy.

Well I can tick all 4 boxes, while it might not win me a prize I was commenting on the act of suicide everything that leads upto it is real the act itself I think is selfish regardless of the background.

I don't normally feel sad for myself only the families and those close to the celebrity when you hear news like this because I never actually know the person. However when I heard about this last night I genuinely felt sad, even know its exactly the same situation as many other celebrities.

I'm reminded of this nice story about him which I read a long time ago.

So we should encourage those with depression to kill themselves? I think I have a new goal in life. The Suicide Whisperer. Perhaps turn my future life events into a film :)

Saying suicide is selfish to be honest is incredibly narrow minded and a very one sided view.

I've battled a VERY bad bout of depression, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.... in that state of mind you just DO NOT care about ANYTHING.

Words can't describe it until you've been in it. There is no possible way to put it across to someone, and to be honest anyone who says it's selfish tells me they haven't experienced it.

DO people think it's selfish?! I've never felt that way. My uncle killed himself 2 years ago due to manic depression, and I never felt anything but anger and sadness. He wasn't selfish; he did battle with himself on a daily basis. I only felt anger because I had to watch my dad go through the pain of losing his brother, and I think it's the way that most people react to death, primarily because you don't have a chance to say goodbye.

I'm absolutely gutted over this, I can't even put into words how sad I felt upon hearing this news. A quick scan of some social media sites and you can see how much of an impact that he had on people's lives, he really was an awesome bloke.

The world has lost someone very special, but heaven has gained one awesome character.

Thoughts are with his family.

R.I.P Robin

Seems weird that he hung himself. I normally avoid giving a **** about celebrity deaths and try my best to avoid absorbing any inevitable and deliberate increased broadcasting/exposure to their works by media corporations cashing in on their deaths, but this time I'm going to let that slide and enjoy the new lease of life granted to his filmography as he was genuinely talented and has been absent from the screen for far too long.

Absolute horrible illness depression. I suffered with it from 17 to 24, it's life destroying, breaks all relationships and makes every minute a battle and every day a war. It's made worse by the fact that people don't tend to understand it unless they've gone through it themselves. It carries a stigma of weakness, especially in men.

For Robin I can only imagine how much the alcohol problem made it worse. RIP such a great man who made the world smile. :(
