Car stuff on Ebay

Has anyone else noticed how more and more useless Ebay is becoming for buying car stuff?

It's not a lack of items - far from it. It's that everyone seems to put everything up at the same Buy it Now price as everyone else and then.... none of it sells because it's all so overpriced.

So the buy it now expires. So the seller re-lists. At the same price. So somebody else decides to sell another of the same item. So he lists it at the same price as everyone else. And never sells it.

Occasionally, one sells.....

...then gets relisted next week. At the same price.

So you try and negotiate with somebody. 'Sorry mate, all the others are £X, so its worth £x'.

So the net result is that nobody seems to sell anything because nobody buys it because the prices are all daft. What's going on?

I was trying to use Ebay to value my wheels for example. There have been a few sets and there are usually about 2 or 3 of them up at any one time. Always at the same price. Never selling. Except when they do sell and mysteriously re-appear the week after at the same price. It's impossible to work out what people actually would pay for something because nobody does auctions anymore, just ever-for-sale buy it now.

Rant over :p

I love when you search on eBay for dead specific suspension parts and are presented with 6000 crap looking £300 a set wheels that are the totally wrong size for your car but have the name of your car in the title anyway.

I rarely use eBay to buy stuff.

I reckon eBay is overpriced for a lot of stuff nowadays because of the ridiculous (IMHO) fees, certainly if the seller isn't a business seller who is shifting thousands of units of stock per month from China or whatever. Even for second hand car components, people seem to be charging a high percentage the brand new value for some grotty-looking used flange widget whatever.

It's great if you want to sell something but the value of second hand stuff in many markets, i.e. car stuff as you said, and things like vintage audio equipment, appears to be a fair bit higher than elsewhere.

I guess all you can do is keep an eye out for listings which have the 'best offer' feature available.

Why don't you start an F10 Owner's Club forum with a 'for sale' section?! :p

This situation has always been to my advantage. See what BIN price your thing is commonly listed at, and put yours up at just below that.

This is why I suggest fox lists his wheels at 10% cheaper than others

Yes I realised that, I was referring to the reason as to why prices seem to be quite rigid at times despite there not being a large amount of sales.

Nobody buys them because they are all too expensive, then somebody comes along and lists one on auction at 99p. Everyone gets excited and bids on it. Bidding war ensues and the auction finishes much higher than all the Buy-It-Now items.
Stupid ebayers.

This keeps happening when trying to look for some used OEM wheels for a spare winter/allseason set.

Just 1000s of listings for fakes that are the wrong size so people can bling up their chav cars

Frankly not even convinced that'll do it. I think peoples ideas of the values of things like that are wildly optimistic. People don't seem to consider the simple rules of supply and demand...

It's been the same trying to buy bits for the E39 in the past - you want a widgit thats worth about 20 quid. Everything is on there never selling, ever, for £50 buy it now.

Occasionally somebody auctions once and it goes for £22.

Just.. what? Frustrating when you want to buy something, there are dozens available but you have to wait for the 5 monthly occurrence of somebody with half a brain selling one instead :D

This! and when you do sell something the fees are ridiculous

I find that although everyone's prices are similar, those who list in a buy it now or best offer format will often take very low offers. I managed to get a light cluster listed listed at £70 for £45 which I was pretty happy with.

Even the fixed price stuff is usually a lot cheaper than ECP - I end up buying most of my car stuff on ebay and only use ECP when I need to pick up something that day.

Bloody hard to get parts shipped from German sellers, although I am looking at older, rarer parts. Even if it states UK the seller just says nein. Still trying to get a stock centre silencer for my e34 after nearly a year.

I've experienced the same from UK sellers trying to ship abroad, but it only happened once with the German seller. But being in the Eurozone helps I guess.

Have you contacted them in advance, saying you'll pay more for the shipping, in euro, etc?

I always tick the "show sold items" box to see what things have sold for to value the item I'm selling.

Yep, it's the first thing I do now to avoid wasting both mine and their time, although my searches are becoming less frequent these days.

I did find one guy who was willing to hold it for me if I made the trip collect it, I think that's what he meant - using a translator to converse can get quite confusing, so I thought I'd try to get as many parts organised as I could and pick them up in one big swoop but didn't get around to it in the end - probably should have put in the effort :(
