Anyone made the jump from 780 to 290? Im going to be down to a single 780 soon for a while and I have the chance to swap for an MSI GE 290 (same as 780) if I wish. Gaming on a single 1400p monitor and I know they pretty similar performance wise but would I gain anything from the 290?

Mantle could be useful as they are saying the new dragon age is 200 hours to wrap up everything and thats my biggest game this year easy.

Anything else? And please no fanboy-ism,productive answers only!

Unless the 3gb memory is holding you back I see no reason for the switch.

Performance as you said is almost identical. Also do you have any plans for G-Sync down the road? I got a refund for my faulty 290 Vapor X and just grabbed a 780 classy.

I plan on grabbing another 780 or stepping up after I see what the 800 series has to offer, and grabbing a Asus Swift monitor.

VRAM on the 780 could be mildly concerning at 1400p though I've managed to stay fairly comfortably below, don't feel like 3GB will last quite as long as I'd like though at that res.

Not had a 290 in my rig but I know people with them IRL and not seen anything that would entice me to swap, seems much of a muchness on a purely performance/iq front - playing the same game with the same settings side by side I wouldn't be able to tell which was getting the higher fps.

Lose PhysX and gain Mantle. i think thats it

I could easily eat that 3GB VRAM @1400p certain games with mods can break 3GB @1080p quite easily but in all honesty i probably wouldn't swap but on the flip to that as an owner of 2 290's i wouldn't swap if the choice was reversed either lol The cards are fairly even and there isn't a great deal between them so it would come down to what extras suit you and the games you play.

I myself went from a 780 to a 290 this week and the only thing I have noticed different so far is my BF4 plays a little more smoothly

Well,i don't play BF so I think ill keep my trusty 780. I was dreading dropping back to single card but it holds on in there in 99 per cent of the games I've played. Metro I have to turn ssaa off and crisis 3 can only play on high really but you can barely tell the difference between high and v high anywhoo. Its never nice downgrading hardware but I can count on one hand the times I've actually needed both 780s ,power-wise,since I've had them and I play almost all the big titles. I suppose this years round up may change that but tbh I have my doubts

We get an itch for an upgrade/new toy at times and it needs scratching and there would be nothing wrong with swapping a 780 for a 290 and at least your knowledge on sorting issues out will improve :D (I jest) but no harm in making the switch if a new toy is the order.

Yeah if you run max settings in BF4 then Mantle will help because it increases your FPS a bit. To get higher FPS with 1 780/290 you need to drop MSAA to 2x really. 4x results in FPS drops which Mantle will help even out.

If you're like me though and drop the settings a bit, it doesn't really make any difference running a 780 over a 290 or vice-versa.
