Spec me a dog !

All dogs might have the odd nibble of furniture etc

In my experience, it's a matter of teaching them what they can and can't chew or use as a toy from day one.
They learn pretty quickly and it's job done. I've never had to deal with furniture or cables etc getting chewed.

Obviously, some breeds are more prone to it and it really helps if they're not left bored out of their minds for extended periods.

Get a rough coated Jack or similar small size terrier.

They are intelligent, hyper whether they are 1 yearold or 15 (which tends to create a lot of funny moments), cute and fearless. Emphasis on the latter - I've seen a Jack go full throttle against an Amstaff 5 times its size.

They also require a lot of attention, extensive exercise and an owner who doesn't give in to their stubborness.

EDIT: I've just read the OP again, it's a bad idea to leave a Jack alone for half a day, unless you want your home trashed. :)

I would say a pug, a french bulldog or a bichon.

I wouldn't suggest a Jack Russell if the OP has young(ish) kids. As you've said, they are hyper, which means they can be very snappy and unpredictable (not saying they intend to hurt, but they can get overexcited very easily!).

My kids are 8 & 9.

I was raised with a dog for most of my life.. They bring fulfillment into your life.. So i've always liked dogs. But of course there is the drawbacks..

The cons are things get expensive when they're ill. They restrict weekends away / holidays, and well they can wreck your home.

Plus the law out here is pretty strict on dogs. Making matters worse, is that i live in what is known as a gated community, with its own rules and regulations.. And all they ever harp on about is making sure dogs are kept on their leads !!!! HOA nazi's we like to call them. They issue out fines.. They're like a bunch of volunteer board members who like to run their own mini government.

But these are the county ordinance laws... and they're enforced !

Pets must be confined to the owner’s property or walked on a leash.
Pets may not run at large.
Pets may not chase, run after, or jump at vehicles or bicycles using the right-of-way; and may not snap, growl, snarl, jump upon, or threaten persons using the right-of-way.
Pet feces must be immediately removed and properly disposed of.
Pets may not create a sanitary nuisance on public or private property.
Pets may not make noise that is offensive and of such a continuous duration of time that it creates a nuisance

Get a staff. Cheap to keep, don't smell, not vocal, not violent, affectionate, don't care for cats, love kids, love adults more, very inteligent, playful when you want them to be, easy to train, no inherent breeding problems, can leave them all day without ruining your house, and #1 dog recommended by kennel club for families.

Tbh keeping the dog on a lead most of the time is no bad thing, my nutter has to be kept on unless he is out in a field or the likes anyway for his own safety!

Most of those rules are actually common sense/decency.

I'd agree, we have a staffie and shes a very docile, intelligent and cuddly dog!

Where I live, they're anal about letting dogs off their leash. (they fine you!) So it'll never be able to run free, it'll always apart from special occasions, like at the dog park, always be subjected to being on a lead.

Only in America.

Samoyed or a Bernese Mountain Dog.

I didn't read the OP, but these are obviously the 2 greatest breeds, so one of those.
