Looking for something with 7 seats, a bit of room, and a bit of luxury. Disco 3 ticks all the boxes. Perhaps not the most reliable of motors, or economical, but that's a price I'm willing to pay. 4th also requirement.

XC90'S do nothing for me, neither do ML's, Q7's are out of budget. I could go X5 but there aren't many 7 seater in budget (must be under £13k).

So Discovery 3 is currently favourite.

What's everyone's experiences? Servicing costs, reliability, etc...

My dad's run a Disco 3 for the last 6 years and it's been about as expected. It's had the common problems with the air suspension compressor (only once though, replacement was ~£600 I think). It's not suffered any major issue though that's had it off the road in that time, and it's well over 100K miles now.

They're properly huge, properly comfortable (in the front, a bit less so in the back but still roomy), and properly capable off road. Real world fuel economy (considering that's he's now a late 60's gentleman driver) is ~28-29MPG from the 2.7 TDV6.

/edit: I should point out that with the 7 seats up, while there's enough room in the "boot" for two large adults to seat comfortably, you're left with fairly limited boot space. I'd say something like 15 inches deep at the most, but down to ~6 inches where the tops of the back seats come close to the rear windscreen.

Sounds good enough for me. Suspension problems I would expect with the air suspension. Heard enough about it from my P38 days.

Yes, the largeness of the machine is a big plus for getting it. As is the 7 seats obviously. I realise there is little boot-space with 7 seats up, but you can't have everything. The Q7 does have boot-space, but it's out of budget, and I doubt it would be as capable offroad.

Not that I'm planning on doing much off-roading. But I do fancy giving it a go. Something I wasn't brave enough to do with my P38.

Just got to decide if I want to go V8, or stick with the oil burner...

Neither engine is exactly economical, but I don't think the diesel has a DPF so you wont get problems there. I suppose you need to choose between 15 & 25 mpg (and, of couse, that Rover V8 sound!)

Check out TD5 Alive as well, they have some good parts that help the improve mpg - though depends if you can restrict using extra boost you'll have.

My dads had every model of disco - he's now on the 4.

No isues at all for his 3, worked like a dream - only issue was my mum scratching it on a post when she parked it once, even then it was just the big plastic bumper corner that got hit.

Very comfy and really good for long distance.

I'm looking at them in the next year or so, though maybe a 4 not sure.

Yep. 15 or 25 mpg will be the choice.

In all fairness though, my V8 RR was the 4.6, and it sounded awesome. Was LPG'd though, and returned an excellent average of 13.5 mpg over the time I had it. Of course, being LPG, and also being half the price of diesel, it was the effective equivalent of 27 mpg (If the RR wasn't LPG's then I would have had the diesel, hence the comparison with diesel prices rather than petrol).

So the LPG'd V8 motor was around the same running costs as the diesel, except obviously no turbo or intercooler to possibly replace. And a fair bit more power. And the noise.

I would LOVE to get a V8 one, but they rare as unfortunately.
