had a bit of a shock today with my middle child being diagnosed as allergic to dogs (along with eleventy billion other things it seems)

now the problem is things like being allergic to eggs we can sort as well as most other things quite easily by removing them from the environment.

now the problem is we have a 13 month old Staffy who is part of the family.

is there a decent air purifier out there that will effectively remove pet dander from the air and give us an option here?


if so what would you guys recommend?
 
You really need to get rid of the dog, your child could end up with allergy asthma. I have a p125 air cleaner from here which works very well but it will never keep all the dander down if you still have the animal. The other thing that will help is opening windows, which is great in summer not so in winter.

We bought a new cat last year which I ended up allergic to. In the end I decided for my health the cat had to go as I didn't want to compromise my health for the next 10-15 years it would be alive.

Depending how bad he is depends on what you do. I am badly allergic to cats and mildly to dogs. I can sense a cat with 5 minutes in a house where as if I touch my face after stroking a dog I get a slight irritation.

My advice is with pet allergies your normally also allergic to dust. So make sure the house is well cleaned and things like curtains in bed rooms are replaced with blinds. Also replace carpet with hard wood where possible. Also washing the dog regularly can help. Try alergy tablets but this is a last resort. Keep the pet off bed and furnishings as it's not much fun sleeping on a bed your now allergic till.

Getting rid of the dog isn't the best solution but is the easiest if he's very bad. Some kids do grow out of it with time but some it can make them very ill.
 
Hmm looks like air purifiers are a bit of a minefield. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of unbiased advice out there,


Anyone knowledgable in what I should be looking for?

Looking at the airfree range ATM most likely a p150 for the boys room with the idea being to confine the dog to certain parts of the house where he doesn't frequent.

Only thing that concerns me is that the airfree units sound a bit gimmicky ie there's no hepa filters and it supposedly burns off all the allergens. Is it a bit snake oil ish and should I be looking at a unit with proper hepa filters or will it do what it says on the tin?

I have the P150. I took the risk of trying one (£130) as my hayfever was just ridiculous overnight and in the mornings. In no uncertain terms, it "cured" me. I was able to sleep all night and get up in the morning with NO symptoms. As soon as I leave the bedroom I start getting symptoms again, it does work and this is coming from someone who was like you and couldn't understand how or believe it.

There is a hayfever thread on here where I posted about it. Another 2 members read my experience, bought the filter for themselves and they to claim the same as me that they are absolutely symptom free when in the same room as this wee gizmo.

I know this relates to pollen allergy, but it's definitely removing pollen from the air in the way it claims. And it claims to do the same for pet allergy. So in all honesty, buy one and try it. £130 is a better first option to see if it does work for your child.... I cannot believe people are instantly saying to get rid of a member fo your family, so what if it is a dog, he is part of the family and you simply do not get rid of something you love without trying other options.

Need any info on the air purifier unit, ask away, can help as best I can.
 
It's not just the dander which is an allergen, it's normally the saliva as well. Therefore, get rid of the child. Keep the dog :)
 
I don't want to verge on medical advice but take allergy testing with a pinch of salt, especially if it was done on blood tests.

The evidence for air purifiers in children with severe eczema is very weak.
 
Just get rid of the dog. Air purifiers can and do work. But that only sorts out air born. Not fur on floor, sofas etc. And being allergic to something is a night mare. Don't make him suffer when he doesn't need to.
 
The airfree units do work. Be aware of the size of room they recommend the unit is used in though. I find the p125 dries the air out of its natural moisture in my living room due to the amount of air running through it. They do work and are very good but as with everything there are good and bad points.

I have allergys to pets. We have two cats (was three). Tried an air purifier and did nothing. What does work is a good vacuum cleaner and meticulous cleaning and polishing and keep the pets out of any bedrooms (or as much if the house as possible)

I've been advised many times to get rid of pets in the past. Won't do, they're family. However at 22 years old I don't think the cats will last much longer and they aren't being replaced, but not because of my allergies though.

See my post. You can have allergies to pets and keep pets.

It gets rid of the issue. Its a simple and best solution.
And if you've ever suffered from allergies then keeping it, is just cruel on the kid, unless its extremely mild. Do you really want a kid to be confined to their bedroom. And feel like **** if they come
out.

Funnily enough I'm not confined to a room and don't suffer any symptoms from my allergies due to following the advice in my own post.

My grandson who has the same pet allergies as me also has no problems round our house.

Now if I visit homes where pets run everywhere and the place isn't clean then my allergies (and asthma) flair up. The reason is allergens are everywhere then.

Yes removal of the source is always best but consider the emotional harm getting rid of a loved pet causes?

it would be less emotional harm than that kid will have sneezing ocean amounts of snot everywhere and feeling bad every day of his childhood life wishing for the pet to just die so he can feel normal like the other kids for once.

try the airfree, i have one and it's great. if it doesn't work get rid of the pet.

You're both making out like he has solar urticaria reaction levels. Most children with allergies (and seeing as my family have a genetic predisposition to these things I have some first and second hand experience of the issue) can live with pets. But again because my point appears to have been missed in the cries of "get rid of the pet" , that cleanliness and area control of the pets are important to reduce or remove symptoms.

Sure, if reactions are bad then the pet may have to go but that isn't as black and white as suggested as it will have an emotional effect.
