Sold my Waterloop ready to sell my 920 combo....I have been hovering for a few days on a shiny new devils canyon but I have decided to stick with my 920 at least until 2015.

Thing is I have no aftermarket cooler for the 920 just the stock air one...what clocks should I expect..?

I have just bought a cheap gtx 580 on MM for some 1080 p casual gaming over winter in my man hive and know that 2.66ghz stock clocks of the 920 will not be good enough...

If I'm looking at only say 3ghz on the stock cooler can someone suggest a cheap air cooler for it? I haven't done air cooling for nearly a decade so I am somewhat out the loop.

I ran this 920 at 4ghz under water so I know she can clock well....I want a enough speed for the gpu and low noise

Thanks

Hunt for a cheap thermalright ultra extreme mate. Will cope very well even on a high oc of 4/4.2. Used one for ages in a 920 @ 4.2.

Secondhand they can be had for 20 quid or so, got one on MM for round this several years ago.

The link in my sig has info from when I overclocked my 920 with a basic cooler. Temps/Noise are fine coz I ended up using less than default voltage rather than more.

Freezer 7 Pro isn't a good cooler, but it's a big step up from stock for 20 quid.

My whole rig is practically silent, keeping noise down is really important to me.

max on stock cooler would be 3ghz-3.2ghz if you have decent low voltsge chip

otherwise grab the best cooler you can afford

I had a thermolab baram cooler on mine and was decent @4.2ghz

Don't have space for the twin rad...my last loop I had the twin rad outside the case...

Want something less obtrusive...

A hex core at 3.8ghz would do me....

I don't know if a H60 will hold you that high dude.

The H60 I had was pretty pants. It wasn't much better than the stock cooler on AMD for me.

It was certainly no better than any 120mm cooler I've used..

The H80 has been on sale refurb recently, maybe dig up one of those or look for an Intel LCS or H70 used? Kuhler 920 would do the job too....

H60 is about on par with an air cooler such as the thermalright ultra extreme.

For me the only time mine did a decent job was on a Sandy Xeon quad core, not clocked. They're not bad on Sandy I hear, but Haswell and on forget it.

The hex core Xeon will generate quite a bit of heat, and I don't think a H60 would be man enough. That's why Intel designed and sold their own LCS which was based on the H70.

That settles it then....I don't want a big hunk of metal in the centre of my mobo....I have two gentle typhoons left from the loop so may as well use them

Just need to get a decent price on the xeon...

What would I get for the 920?

Bout 30 quid?
