My current specification is as follows:

Q6600
Gigabyte DS4 motherboard (1 of the ram slots is faulty)
3GB DDR2
Radeon 5770 1GB

Can anyone suggest a decent budget upgrade for the motherboard, CPU and RAM?
I've been out of the game for a while and have no idea to go with either AMD or Intel etc.
How does the 5770 performance compare to the newer graphics cards?

Looking to spend probably no more than £300.

Sorry for not including that information.

All my drives are SATA. I currently have a normal ATX case (will a mAtx board fit?).

That CPU isnt a "K" so overclocking will be limited on the Z97 board. But with both at stock speeds there is only a 400MHz difference in speed between them that you may not notice.

As for your GPU, depends on the games you play, resolution and settings etc.

Got it. I'm not so fussed about overclocking - in fact I won't bother at all.

Would you recommend the 4440 in that case? Is it worth going for 16gb ram?

Its worse than i5 and i3 but better then q6600 and you can overclock it, no point going for the ram in this setup as Pentium is limited to 1333Mhz but later you can replace cpu and have very nice build

PS: what psu do you have?

I would personally go to the members market and pick up an i5 + motherboard, they go for roughly £130 or less most of the time, maybe even pick up a GPU there too and ram.

It's sort of half of a i5 but with less features. To be honest, if you are not going to overclock you can save some money on the motherboard by going for something like the Gigabyte B85M-D3H. It's a good solid board and would make a good base for a non-overclocked system. The money saved can be spent elsewhere.

Alternatively get in the MM and pick up a bundle.

it's a budget pc he's after so not so expensive new anyway,i think he should go for new parts for the warranty specially if it's for main pc.

my recommendation for budget cpu & mobo:

I went for this bundle of kit - just put it together however I may have an issue.

My PSU (a 750w one of some kind) only has 1x6 pin PCI-E power connector and it looks like the card needs a 6 + 8 pin connector.

Do I have to get a new PSU?
Alternatively, can i get a molex to 8 pin PCI-E adapter?

It's a CIT 750UB. Sounds like a pile of crap. For some reason I thought I was running a Hiper PSU but it seems like I got my wires crossed.

So yeah, can I use the adapter short term until I upgrade the PSU? If I upgrade the PSU will a corsair 750m do the trick? I can pick one up tomorrow if so.
