Advice for cooling a 4790K

Hey guys, just built a new system for a friend and it has made me want to jump on this weekends offers and cashback.

So question - What cooler would you recommend for a 4790k?

The reason I ask is the system I just finished building used a Noctua NH-U14S and I was surprised how quickly the new 4790K's heat up even with what I thought was quite a bit cooler (stock volts too). Having had a read it sounds like it's pretty normal but just wondered if anyone has found an air cooler that deals with the density of the heat being put out better than others?

Haswell based chips do just run hot. The cooler from noctua should be fine. Though I would not expect ground breaking clocks. Using things like prime95 though will put a silly amount of stress on the processor, unrealistic levels if you ask me. Your temps will go through the roof, however if you just benchmark and game etc then you should be able to mange a decent clock with that cooler.

Then best option would be h100i or better though.

Well yes.
It was a 4770k. 3.5k stock, 3.9k boost, clocked to 4.4k at 1.35v.
Unfortunately temps were the only good thing about this cpu, couldn't clock it higher no matter what.

Prolimatech Megahalems looks interesting, any difference between the black and the (cheaper) silver one? Anyone using a Thermalright HR-02 Macho on a similar processor?

get the megahalems with the new megahalems slim fans, they're brilliant, they look good too!

but to get the 4770/4970 to run cool you have to delid it, this will make the cpu about the same as the old i5 2500, mine hit 5.1 on easytune and i had it there for about two hours, but to do it right i have to overclock manually, because Easytune sets the volts and wattage way too high

the max with everything still set way too high is 4.7 on Prime 95, at about 80 to 90 degrees, so i'd say the cpu/ megahalems is pretty damned good........but i cant start a manual OC till monday

i OC my pc via BIOS and it did 4.7 .........that's good enough for me, plus it was ok with Prime.

so the Megahalems is fine, it'll be cooler with a Phanteks but that's a massive ugly thing so there you go.

plus finally, no need to go above 4.7.........

yea the fan kicks out a lot of heat on its exit side at 4.5, mine wont go above this, but it's not heat related; because at 4.7 i was staring at Prime when it suddenly crashed, it was only 68 degrees.

Megahalems black really does look good, you wont be dissapointed, the only other cooler i'd get is the ``be quiet``
