Is there a good Helicopter Sim out there ??

I am installing it now but it looks like you have to buy each aircraft is that correct ?

Yes, you get 2 modules free (a P-51 and a Su-25T), the rest have to be bought.

Of the 3 Helicopters available, the Ka-50 is the easiest to fly, but the hardest to fight in. The Huey is quite a handful but once mastered is a real pleasure to fly. Oh and the miniguns ..... :)

EDIT:- Can't forget this one too

DCS certainly does work with joystics, Take On I remember playing with a stick too.

But go for DCS - its is actually easier to fly than Take On - because it is more realistic, its physics just make sense, Take on can be extremely unstable in hover because it does not model air compression/ground effect too well.

Just taking off and landing on roofs etc is great fun in DCS.

Ok so DCS is up and running and does look fantastic ... my X45 does work ( well sort of ) but either I am not looking in the right place or the X45 isn't really compatible as I am unable to tune the stick or assign any functions to the stick and as DCS has about a million keyboard keys its going to be a very steep learning curve !!!!!

So can I ask what controls are people using in DCS ??

See page 22 onward in the DCS manual (in the start menu) - it explains how the inputs system operates.

See page 27 onward for tuning your stick.

Never heard of DCS so can't comment on that but I find X Plane 10 to be bloody amazing.

It's a flight sim based more on fixed wing aircraft but the helis are on a whole different level to anything I've experienced.

Join VATSIM when you can handle a chopper well :)

The base sim is £50ish, and you can buy tons of aircraft off their marketplace (pretty pricey, be warned).

Another awsome sim. Lots of people use this when training for FAA licence or to become an air traffic controller.

+1 for the Huey within DCS..

Plus, hopefully sometime before the Armageddon Eagle Dynamics are going to release the upgrade for the graphics, named Edge.

Should bring a whole new level to the sim..

At some schools they use it in their simulators, in which case the hours actually count towards your licence too.

You can also fly a Shuttle. All I'll say is that it splinters magnificently when you crash it :p

DCS makes sims for the Pentagon and for the Russian Military, their partner Belsimtek who made the Huey also made commercial chopper simulators...
