Hey

so found today my car has run low on oil, I had planned to do the oil filter next week so will be doing this tomorrow.

I went to buy some oil and it's around £40 which tbh I haven't got due to repair bills on the house.

I did find some castrol edge TD in the garage which is new and unused

it's labeled as Turbo diesel oil but according to its spec and other sites it's perfectly fine for use in petrol engines.

What I'm here to ask is if you guys think it's ok? I'm leaning towards thinking it's fine.

Let me know!

What car do you have and what exactly is the oil?

Unless it's urgent, buy some correct oil online for a lot less?

It's a clio 172.

its castrol edge TD 5w-40 fully synthetic. Which is the same type I need for my car bar this one saying it's for diesels. I'm only confused because many forums say castrol have said it's just marketing stuff and it's fine for petrol cars.

Yea it's kinda urgent tbh, I have already drained it and I need the car for work on Tuesday! I can buy some nice expensive oil on the 1st if required.

The classification isn't what determines whether it is the correct oil for the job - look for the gradings and standards that the oil meets, it should be on the back or side of the bottle, and see if it corresponds to the requirements of the car.

Or if in doubt, PM Simon and I'm sure he could advise as to what's in that particular oil and whether it's suitable ;)

SaE 5W-40;aCEa C3;aPI SM/CF,VW 502 00/ 505 00/ 505 01,BMW Longlife-04,MB-approval 229.31/ 229.51,Renault RN0700/0710,Meets Ford WSS -M2C917-a,Meets Fiat 9.55535-S2

Check what spec the car requires and I'm sure it would be fine as it is a well-specced oil.

It will be fine, it's a good oil and is branded Diesel oil as it meets stringent specs/tests etc. It's one of the best 5w40 oils you can buy.

What is in the car already? I'm not 100% on what brands/types of oil you can/can't mix.

Will be fine. As said it's developed for petrol and diesels. The turbo diesel is a branding difference.

I use it in my S2000.

The new Castrol EDGE is out now too

So if you put 'turbo diesel' engine oil in a petrol engined car, does that convert the car to run on turbo diesel from then on?
I'm assuming 'turbo diesel' is like 'super unleaded' or something. I've never seen it on a pump but I guess only certain filling stations sell it?

Use the same Castrol "TD" oil in my 1.2 Polo as Dad puts in his 1.9 TDI.

As has been said, it is just a marketing thing. :) 5W40 Synth is 5W40 Synth.

Not sure if serious. :p
