Has anyone off here done it?

Thinking of doing it towards the end of a 3.5 week trip in SE Asia early next year but i'm concerned with how easy/safe it is going to be transporting a diamond engagement ring (already purchased) with me through various airports etc.

We aren't staying in any one place for more than a few nights so its not something I can just pop in a room safe and forget about (plus she will be able to see what's in the safe too!)

I know I could always take a "dummy" ring and do it but I feel it loses some of its impact doing that, but obviously it beats losing an expensive ring.

Anyone any advice or is it not worth the risk?

If you take vitamins, hide it in the canister. Wrap it in some tissue and tape it to the inside on the bottom if possible.
 
I've done it. Didn't do anything fancy with it. Just kept it in the box, and sat it on top of the bag it was in. If security at airports asked to see in the bag, I ask them to be discreet. Wasn't a problem, except the now wife thinking I was a weirdo. But there is little else you can do.
 
you will need it insured after so just make sure it's covered on your house contemts policy before you go
 
Can't you buy another ring from a looky-looky man and use that? Then just give her the real one at home. (Or gauge the reaction and if she's happy enough with the first one then take the real one back for a refund).

I wouldn't trust most hotel room safe's anyway... I'm sure you could stash a ring inside a pair of socks or something... if you keep your dirty/used clothes/underwear thrown into a suitcase you've just chucked in the bottom of a wardrobe then I doubt it would be discovered by chance by cleaning staff. They've have to not only be meticulously searching your whole room while they're supposed to be giving it a brief daily clean/towel change... they'd also have to be searching each individual item of used clothing etc...
 
I did it last year - didn't arrange for any special insurance but just kept the ring on or near me (camera back pack) at all times.
 
also, just a point that may or may not be useful...
a friend of a friend attempted a similar proposal but only got as far as the airport as he had the ring in his hand luggage and was made to open his bag at security!

Bought from within the UK? if not will get slapped with import duty feels like s slap in the face I'd imagine, doubt many get caught out though unless your famous and have paps following you

The rules state that any jewellery worth more than £390, brought into the UK from outside the EU, is subject to VAT and customs duty.

I'd imagine loads of people pass through airports wearing engagement rings with no issue. Probably just the celebs who get caught given the amount of tax they might have to pay.
 
Did mine in Spain on the beach.

Diddnt have any issue at the airport, i just hid the ring in my suitcase all week.

Did mine on a beach in Cuba at sunset but otherwise I did the same. I just kept mine in my carry on rucksack instead of my check in luggage.
 
Thanks for the tips guys. Don't really fancy leaving it in my suitcase whilst its being checked in on planes, it's probably less likely to be found but I always worry about my case/bag going missing so I'd rather have it on me in person.

I like the idea of taping it to the bottom of a tablet bottle or something, not something that you would expect to be stolen, can you take a tub of tablets in your hand luggage? I can only imagine that looks VERY suspect going through airport security on the scanners! Think i'm going to have to be creative with it as i'm going to have to carry it through Thailand, Cambodia and then into Vietnam over a mixture of air and land travel!

I suppose the only hurdle taking it with me would be it being picked up in my hand luggage when going through airport security.

Also, the ring has already been purchased in the UK and is in my possession so won't be subject to any duties.
