What's the difference between an e30 m tech and m3?

There we two versions of the E30 M Tech in the UK - the 1 and 2. They both had the 6 Cylinder 2.5L M20 engine (I believe the only difference between them is a slight change in the M Tech factory body kit). The E30 M3 also had a couple of different versions but they all had the S14 engine which was a 4 Cylinder so that's the main difference. (They put a highly tuned 4 Cylinder into the M3 to preserve the weight distribution - this is why the 318is is referred to as the 'Baby M3' even though it was not the most powerful E30, it just had a solid 4 Cylinder).

TL,DR: M Tech cars had a straight six and the M3 had a 4 Cylinder.

Called into a Harley Davidson show on the way home in Scotland and saw these there

There is a completely ruined and chavved up E60 with Halfords special wheels, Halfords special lights, eBay body kit and black painted bonnet and boot lid near me...

Keep meaning to grab a picture... Somewhen. :p

So that you can recognise peoples cars as they pass you, so that the Police can spot vehicles they are looking for as they pass them, so that they can take down the numberplate of a driver comitting some kind of crime without having to give chase and get the plate from the rear.

There isn't really anywhere to put a numberplate on a bike, though some had front numberplates sideways on the front mudguard until the 60's.

pointless in this day and age since the cars have front and rear facing ANPR cameras.

Its just a BS thing from the past that we'll ultimately never get rid of because everybody in europe seems to think its essential.

Truvelo cameras don't either.

ultimately pointless however since the UK roads have a plethora of rearward facing cameras as well.

Lets not kid ourselves, having front cameras to enable speed detection is not a necessity - it would just be awkward to replace the existing front facing ones.

Car parks dont.....

Again, pointless because those same cameras could just be placed differently to catch the rear of the car as it entered the car park. It would be awkward and costly, but its not an actual necessity. Does everybody go about parking anywhere they like and doing whatever speed they like in the UK causing traffic chaos ? No. You could survive, but its only because of the cost of switching from our current legacy setup it will never happen. And i totally get that part - i'm just pointing out there is no actual physical need for a front plate anymore.

I'm going to Gatwick and parking tomorrow, I will drive up to the barrier and it will open as I have booked and paid for a slot.... How do you expect that would work without a front plate on a busy day?

I see your point though, the states manage. Guess reverse parking to a wall would make your car 'unknown'

Plates are largely irrelevant here, you can have such stupid spacing and characters that it doesn't matter.

We have one in the house that's U$UK R1. supposed to read US UK R1. I'm looking to get ACE MSTR :D

it would be a backwards step - you'd have to give your reg over an intercom like we had to when we went to manchester airport car park a in 2006.

Price worth paying for not having a front number plate though :D though I know only petrolheads will see it that way - joe public in his fiesta would much rather have all this stuff automated because half the time they don't even know their own numberplate.

I wouldn't think it's not too far into the future when they'll be ECU readers everywhere kind of like a bar-code reader hard coded for each vehicle.

So reg plates will be pointless.

Yes I'm aware a smidgeon will re-flash them but the vaaaaaaaaaast majority wont.
