Your dream house?

Had this discussion (money = happiness) the other day with a friend, conclusion: Doesn't matter as if I'm depressed I can wipe the tear away with a strippers tassle.

:D

It certainly relieves a lot of the stresses that the burden of money can bring.

which then can allow you to focus on the things that make you happy without the worries in the back of your mind.

My dream house is far simpler than most here.

All I'd want is a nice 3 or 4 bed detached house with a big double garage, with internal access to house, a reasonably sized back garden that backs onto a paddock so I can watch the horses munch away sat there with a beer in my hand. It'd be out in a village somewhere, I've come to the conclusion superfast broadband isn't a massive priority for me any more but a good ambient light free night would be great, so I could have a decent telescope and gaze up at the stars with a beer in my hand.

Why are you letting your horses drink beer and why are you holding it for them? ;)

For sure. Most houses are too dark, so mine would have a lot of windows.

Full cat6 cabling to every room - it's important!

Probably (partly) made of wood, solar roof tiles, as heat efficient as possible, maybe underfloor heating too :p

Decent bit of land to include a wooded area and a stream. Gotta love dem trees.

They are too dark because of compliance to EU regs on insulation and heat loss, there are guidelines on how much glazing you are allowed to use and what U-values are. Windows are much worse at heat loss as opposed to cavity wall with insulation obviously. Not to mention there are laws on privacy. You can get round the first point with some triple glazing with argon filled gas for example to up the U-value but it can only do so much. There is a point where you can have a "max" amount of glazing.

Not to mention old houses (and generally mass built) makes little consideration of the angle of the sun during the day to get maximum light (and heat).

I'd like to have my own built, along the lines of the 'house in the hill' that was on grand designs a few years ago - although I wouldn't mind it being slightly less eco friendly to allow a bit more light in and have a bit more space.

The misses and I almost pulled the trigger on this last week:

..which is pretty much my dream home for right now.

But then we decided it would be a bit too tight on the finances, so we are looking for something a bit cheaper. So far the other houses we have seen haven't come close to be honest :(

Whereabouts is that? ^

Its in the outskirts of Malmo in Sweden.

Self Build

We were told it was a one off architect design. One of those houses you visit that looks even better in the flesh. We could 'probably just about' afford it and the bank would lend us the money with a 25% deposit, but it was just too close for comfort really. Dang!

Self build castle in the middle of nowhere, pretty much impossible with current planning regs.

A lot of the homes above look like they have been designed for brochures rather than living in.

Everyone seems to go for loads of glass not me I hate window cleaning. My dream home would not necessarily be big, tow or three bedrooms and a fair sized man cave apart from that I cannot really think of anything else I would want in a house.

So if I suddenly came into cash a smallish house would suffice and the rest spent on visiting parts of the world I should have visited when I was much younger.
