AMD’s Richard Huddy Responds To Criticisms of Mantle

Games are not made overnight unfortunately, but Mantle still has more games in development than DX11 did in its first year. That alone is encouraging. Let's see how many DX12 games are ready a few months after the API launches.

Not a criticism or anything was a decent read, though at least 3 of the questions he answered with 70 developers :p

It may have more games in its first year then dx11, you do have to remember that since 2009 (dx11) the pc gaming industry as a whole has grown monumentally. Some quick searches put steams user base at 25m in 2009 and over 80m to date.

More users, more demand, more money in the market, more interest from developers will give more games and more developer activity. If dx11 had launched in such a thriving market then who knows how many titles it would have hit in its first year.

Fair comment. :)

It's been nearly 12 months since AMD showed off Mantle and there's been sod all that's really shown a good improvement.

No use showing a product and then when it releases it barely makes a difference, heck BF4 runs faster in DirectX then it does Mantle on my PC.

Hmm. Firstly your denying mantle makes a difference then your (in another thread) saying your overclocked 290P is right up there with the 7990!

Mantle is a god send for me and my rig when it comes to bf 4.

DX - stuttery mess (even with low settings)
Mantle - smooth as silk

Really hope we get more games with mantle, will save me from having to upgrade my CPU + mobo :)

Can have over 100 developers for all I care. The main questions should be are any of them making good games and are these games there making "needing" mantle performance boost or are they going to be games you can play at decent fps with most setups regardless of mantle?

Good info, thanks for posting it LT.
Obviously it takes time for the developers to get the games out, but at least with more and more developers signing up the chances of some good games being released with mantle support increases.

Certianly inteeresting times ahead.

Cheers LT. :)

Well one of the biggest games in the next year will have it,ie,Star Citizen and so will the next Civilization.

Very true and it is certianly one of the games i am loooking forward too, a long time to wait though. Hopefully it will be worth it.

LT which AMD cards support Mantle ?

All GCN cards "support" mantle, though some support it better than others. The 290(x) cards are particularly well supported.

Sell your 7970's and get two 290's ^^^^ you will see a huge difference, take it from another FX-8350 user :)

How does this answer his question? I understand that 290s are very well optimised for mantle (or vice versa) but you've just told him to upgrade from a very powerful set of cards without reason (other that huge difference which is true for 99% of this forum's users).
It's possible that you replied to the wrong thing or your reply wasn't posted correctly - sorry if so.

The only cards that fully support Mantle which he can move up from his 7970's are 290's.

From the look of the DX12 demo Microsoft showed it's pretty much on par with Mantle.
It might be similar in function, but we don't know how the performance compares. Also, while dx would work for both Nvidia and AMD, there's still the issue on if developers would (properly) make use of it. I mean look at dx11...it's been nearly 5 years now, and how many "proper" dx11 games we have had?

I think the difference between Mantle and dx12 is probably going to be that Mantle will allow developers to have more customisation for their game engine specifically, where as dx12's low-overhead feature is more likely to be provided on a "as is" basis.

Consoles were on DX9c till the new ones so that held back PC games as a lot are ports.

DX10 was poorly supported and DX11 is better supported and I would guess MS now they have their finger out will support DX12 even more so once they get the next OS fixed as they are losing lots of money and 18k employees.

Yes but look at it this way for as second- An AMD branded title (flagship for mantle as well) runs poorly on DX and well on mantle. It may run better with mantle but borking DX performance a bit will make those gains look even better wont it.
This could be something to think about in the future........

That statement isnt red or green BTW just stating its a very real posibility

Johan Andersson would not allow, support or condone gimping of DirectX so don't think that is what is going on for a second. Whilst DX cannot offer the same gameplay experience Mantle does, it still does a good enough job on the whole. The problems with Battlefield 4 are so vast, you cannot really blame this on one particular API. The issues are deeper than that. The game is a bit of mess for everyone at the moment, Battlelog is full of it. We can only hope the huge update coming early September fixes a lot of these issues.
