• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

This is bad for multi GPUs - Intel Core i7-5820K Features Fewer PCI-Express Lanes After All

Can I ask a quick sort of related question please.

Z97 Maximus Hero motherboard,

How many lanes does it have? Is it 20?
Presumably it can do 2 x sli and 3 x crossfire so is it 2 x 8 and 1 x4 or is different? Cheer's

This is why I'm pretty much done with PC gaming, to many with a vested reason to rip you off and too little competition.

thing is most people wont need to buy the new stuff anyway as 99 percent have what they need this is why sales keep dropping on pc.

unless you benching 24/7 pointless .

I'm I being dumb here ? Ok they charge you at current price but surely the price you have paid is the price you have paid. If its in your warehouse the price isnt going to go up just becuase the exchange rate has changed ?

They will purchase in USD so are completely exposed to the risk.

Of course this risk should also be hedged; either directly by buying dollars using FX instruments or my placing non deliverable forwards which allow you hedge the risk without directly trading in the currency (useful if its a currency you don't normally trade in or don't have vast swathes of cash floating about).

Hedging would allow Overclockers to still get USD at decent exchange rates even if cable (GBP:USD) tumbles.

Banks also like this as they make a truck load of money from forward contracts in the market.

Slightly off topic but hey ho.

You are aware sales on gaming PC are actually growing and have being for past two years and not just at OcUK but world wide.

Just so you know. :)

Good to know and more and more people I know are turning to PC for gaming as opposed to consoles.

Yep, just 2 way sli and 3 way xfire on the hero, same as my board in sig. Not great if you have other add in cards either as things can get a bit cramped due to slot spacing.

I don't think the new 8 core Haswell-E will be much use for benching as I think it will have cooling problems and a low overclock.

Having said that next year I will probably build a system around one with a single GPU for gaming as it is ideal for my favourite game (Civ5) which needs a very powerful CPU.

Civ5 on a huge map and single continent late in the game can cripple even the most powerful PCs so a 5960X based system could be ideal.

Can Civ5 utilise 16 threads?

I don't know about that but it is pretty hard on the CPUs.

I have noticed improved performance going from i7 975 to i7 980 to 3960X to 4930k. Hopefully a 5960X will continue the trend.

Most people don't get problems with the game it is only when you play on a huge map late in the game with a massive empire that the problems occur.

The other thing I will want to do is get a single full fat 20nm card to use as well next year.

With Civ5 it does not matter if you use 1 or more cards the late game problems are the same as I think they are related to CPU/GPU grunt, bus throughputs, bandwidths etc.

Looking forward to your Mantle CIV feedback Kaap. Looks like that might be your perfect Mantle game. Vram usage won't be high either look at the type of game it is. Certainly i see about 2.5gb vram usage in PvZ at 1440P max details. 1gb less than BF4.

This will be the ultimate test for Mantle.

If it is anything like the old Civ5 game it will really test the CPU, RAM, Bus etc. Mantle will either really shine or fail really bad.

Kaap check this out. This is the graphics lead on CIV talking about the game, Mantle and the effect its going to have on CIV. Should be up your street if you love the game.

EDIT: fancy comparing a haswell 1150 overclocking heat to the 5960x:rolleyes:
